Garment exports to grow next year

BANGKOK: -- Thai garment industry will see significant recovery next year, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) forecasted.

FTI vice president and advisor of the Thai Garment Manufacturers Association Wallop Wittanakorn said Thai garment exports would recover significantly next year, attributing to the recovering U.S. economy.

He said the US recovery will likely lead to the nation’s placing more garment orders from Thailand, offsetting the declining demand from Japan.

Mr Wallop said that demands from South Korea and Hong Kong would also increase on-year.

However, exports to the EU might take a dip due to the expired Generalised System of Preferences(GSP) which reverts the reduced export tax of 2.4% back to 12%.

The FTI vice president also predicted that women’s dress shirts, shirts with environmental messages printed on, highly ventilated clothing, and clothes made from recycle materials would be in trend next year.

And yet Thailand will take help Russia with its counter-economic sanctions against the US/EU by increasing food exports to Russia. The US/EU may not appreciate Thailand siding with Russia in an economic "tug of war" as it benefits from a recovering US economy! Thailand is already on the precipice of US trade sanctions over human rights violations and US/EU over the lack of real democratic progress in Thailand. Thailand needs to carefully consider where its economic loyalties lie if it wants continued open and free access to Western markets.

To Gen. Prayuth, it's not that Western countries "do not understand" Thailand, it's that they do.

What exactly is highly ventilated clothing?
