Overland daytrips?

Featured Replies

I'm going to staying near Prachuap Khiri Khan over the xmas with the extended family & would like to know if it's possible to do a day's road trip into Myanmar.

One concern is can Thai's do this with just their Thai ID?

That border is slated to become an international crossing at some point. Thais may be allowed across now, but probably only to the market on the other side. A better strategy would be for everyone to use their passports and obtain a Myanmar visa and enter Myanmar at Phu Nam Ron in Kanchanaburi province, then travel to Dawei. Myanmar is a fascinating country and warrants far more time than a "day trip". Besides, there is no infrastructure, no towns of any size anywhere along the border between Kawthoung (opposite Ranong) and Myawady (opposite Mae Sot).

So perhaps you will need to reconsider your plan and head up to Kanchanaburi instead.

Note also that since Thai cars can't enter Myanmar (except on a tour), you'll need to park your car on the Thai side and hire a Burmese vehicle with driver on the other side.

Thanks TTT

No worries. I'm now hearing that the Phu Nam Ron crossing once again allows visas on arrival for all nationalities, for travel as far as Dawei I believe. You may therefore be able to show up with just your passport and without a visa, cross over to Dawei for a day or two and then back again and the required fee payable to the Myanmar authorities (and/or possibly the Thais). I highly doubt a day trip would be possible though due to the lengthy travel times getting from the border to anywhere of interest i.e. Dawei and surrounding beaches. If you were just to do a visa run, that would be possible too but I believe there's nothing on the Burmese side apart from maybe a small market and it seems like you actually want to see something.

However, as always it's best to double check this information regarding the visa situation at this border crossing as it is subject to change without notice.
