Spare the scare and spoil the child?

BANGKOK: -- The online community welcomed a video of a mother tormenting her son with a cockroach to the point of tears with a near-unanimous: “You’re a terrible mother.”

In the footage shared online, a terrified little boy of about 2, shrinks away from the ugly damn roach waved around by his mother, who is heard threatening to bite him with it if he does not promise to be a good boy and eat all his food.

This is pretty much how the conversation goes:
Mom: “Are you going to be a jerk to me?”
Kid: “No… please don’t.”
Mom: "I'm not gonna bring it to you. I just want you to swear in front of the cockroach that you will be a good boy. Otherwise I'm going to bring the cockroach to bite you"
Kid: "I'll be a good boy. I promise."
Mom: "Are you going to finish your food?"
Kid: "I promise."

After the anonymous mother released the video on Facebook, she promptly defended herself, saying she’s not sorry at all.

“I don’t wanna beat him because it’s violent,” she was quoted in Daily News. “Cockroaches are not dangerous, it’s just a thing people don’t want near them.

Wow. Just wow.

I was born without that maternal urge and never wanted to have children, but it really saddens me to think of the people, probably in their millions worldwide who desperately want, but are unable to have, children.

What must those people, who would cherish a child - likely more than most - think of this woman?

What on earth is the word coming to - I see absolutely nothing unusual about this.. Who do the writers of Coconuts think they are to say what is good and bad parenting. Far from neutral reporting.

This is the Thai style of parenting and personally I think it produces psychologically better people than say the USA. Take a look at how many of their adults are on antidepressants or tranquilizers compared to Thailand's adults.

I was shocked that in many parts of India they give opium to babies to stop them crying. In Orissa, I couldn't buy a beer but could buy ganja and opium The Indians were shocked that in Scotland we give whisky to kids for a cold or to stop crying.

Lots of judging on here of the mom. Do you have a two year old? Haven't you ever been driven crazy by them? The mom is trying to scare her son into being good without hitting him. Hell, even my wife does the "scary dookay (lizard) routine" with our child, not waving one at her of course, but just saying a dookay will get her if she's bad. It's harmless. I know a Thai woman studying for her PhD in linguistics and she recounts funny stories of her mom doing this to her when she was a child. "Eat your rice or the dookay will get you." She's grown up to be normal. It's just what they do, especially in the countryside.

So while all of you armchair psychologists are pounding away at the keyboard about how horrible this mother is and how she doesn't deserve children, and oh, that poor child....just think about what you are saying. Get angry at real violence like the man who while drunk beat and killed his 8 year old son who didn't do his homework. Get angry at the story in India of a mom who tossed her newborns in a bin. Get angry at the news of a child forced to live behind a secret wall in his own house. Get angry at REAL abuse, not this crap.

That woman does not need to apologize to us, and I'm glad she didn't.

Everyone understands there is worse abuse than this but this type of non-violent psychological abuse creates deep seated psychological problems which manifest themselves later in life, but there's always a Devil's Advocate.

Giving a child a slap occasionally is not wrong provided they know what the slap is for and because they did something dangerous to deserve it.

I'm sure that any woman could encourage their child to eat without the "something's gonna happen if you don't approach". Much easier to let your kid eat when he's hungry and turn the music up if he's having a fit. Do country people really know what they are doing anywhere?

What's the reason for waving Issan food in front of him?? smile.png

Actually, the insect cart vendors were full of hungry customers, up in Isaan, just after they released this video.

The kids were scarffing up the critters, and only fussed when their mom was not fast enough in pulling the roaches out of the bag.

Wish my mum had roaches when I was growing up.

Instead of the electric shock therapy...................sad.png

But seriously, is this children's PC turned 1800? She has stated that she doesn't want to hit the child as this is violent. Does she think that this is a good substitute for a short, sharp shock (as I did get when growing up).

Not defending her actions in any way, but worth thinking about.

He should keep a copy of that video..

It will be a perfect defense when he goes off the rails and massacres a shopping mall full of people in 20 years time :)

Really, is this gonna twist his mind forever, doubt it !

So it's okay to mentally torture a 2 year old child? Is that what you are saying?
