Government's New Year fuel price 'gift'
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The National Energy Policy Committee has lowered the price of diesel fuel and petrol by Bt1 and Bt2 a litre respectively in what has been labelled a New Year gift in line with government policy.

"This is a gift from the government in celebration of the New Year," Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said yesterday.

He added that since the National Council for Peace and Order, which he also heads, seized power from the elected government, fuel prices in Thailand had dropped by nearly B10 a litre.

"The prices may get even lower in the future," he said.

Prayut said the fuel-price structure had been distorted, causing motorists to use liquefied petroleum gas and forcing the country to import more of the product.

Nevertheless, he said the LPG price for households would remain unchanged. For oil-based fuels, he said more price cuts were possible.

The Oil Fund, which currently has a balance of Bt20 billion, will be kept to help stabilise fuel prices when they go up, he said.

The supreme energy board agreed to restructure fuel prices, outlining six key policies: Energy prices must reflect their true costs; excise tax rates should be similar for each transport fuel; and cross-subsidy between fuel products must be reduced.

It also said the marketing margin of motor-fuel retailers must be at appropriate levels and low-income earners must be taken care off.

The National Energy Policy Committee also approved a feed-in tariff structure for electricity purchased from renewable power projects and a 15-year power-development plan.

Nothing to do with the worldwide price of oil of course, just "Dear "Leader" helping his people.

My thoughts exactly Dear leader is lying and feeding the mushrooms crap. Talk about lies deceit coming from the junta and idiots probably believe this

Kind of like bringing home a take away resturant meal that is on special, and within budget. You then serve it on your own plates and claim credit for it. The whole family knows what has been done but say nothing, its called being diplomatic.

i think the government announced there would be a list of ' gifts ' released on Dec 25.

Any chance the announcement will be made by someone in a Santa suit, maybe even the PM himself ?

No reason why the Minister of Tourism doesn't then weigh in and state the the whole Santa thing actually originated here.

And they could have just as easily gone higher had price of oil gone up during that period. Surely they don't expect ordinary Thais to fall for this? Jesus, someone get be outa here!

Just goes to show that this hiso elitist looks down on the people of Thailand and treats them like stupid morons. He thinks he is buying their admiration with gifts he didnt even organise.

Bit like the guy who steals the flowers from the funeral home and gives them to his girlfriend and forgets to take the RIP card off first.

I guess the government believes the Thai people are that stupid to believe this bunch of crap that they are telling them.

I await with interest to see if they get away with it. This truly is bare-faced cheek at its worst...

Just spoke to a well educated Thai that wasn't exactly aware that oil prices had dropped, but she did think that Thailand paid less for their fuel than other countries, presumably because the Thai government love the people of Thailand and want to help them.
