bannork Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Yesterday Patsycat mentioned that Eric Clapton didn't write Cocaine and it got me thinking how it could be fun to start a thread where each poster put up an original song and then a later version/cover.Of course some songs have no known original composer but never mind, just the earliest or standard version would do. Years ago it stuck in my mind when a reviewer launched a scathing criticism of The Doors Light My Fire, it was far inferior to the version by Jose Feliciano he raged. Oh well! 1
xen Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 I love the interpretations of other peoples songs but some songs are that great that almost every version is good. I am thinking of songs like Cyndi Lauper's "Time after Time" or Willie Nelson's " funny how time slips away" . But to begin here are too very different covers , The first being on my list of the most overblown, wanky, pompous and plain embarrassing songs for a Band like Queen who occasionally did some great stuff along with some crap. The second is a plain rendition on the song that is tastefully understated compared with the original. It made me realise what a good song it can be. Sorry if i offend with my opinion. 1

bannork Posted December 21, 2014 Author Posted December 21, 2014 I've got to say I agree with you xen, the version of Bohemian Rhapsody by Grey DeLisle is far more moving than that of the strutting flamboyant queen, Freddie Mercury. One thing i noticed though- the melody when she sings 'carry on...' is just like John Lennon's 'God' .. 'you'll just have to carry on'- interesting. Neil Young- has anyone ever done a cover of any of his songs that is better? Perhaps it's a musical impossibility! Fred Neil, what a talent, the composer of ' Everybody's Talkin' and possessor of a great baritone voice and the Harry Nilsson version that was such a hit 1
rgs2001uk Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 The utterly brilliant VTM, before he dissappeared up his own backside. Dear listeners, please do not adjust your speaker settings, there is nothing wrong with them, what you are hearing is from another time space and planet, check out the drums and bass, before the Master blows us away into another dimension, almost a parrallel universe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBG9RsP5ltk
rgs2001uk Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 A pleasant enough little tune, the sort of stuff your parents listened to. Until this guy gets his hands on it, 1
bannork Posted December 22, 2014 Author Posted December 22, 2014 As a nipper I as forced to go to church in dear old Blighty, god it was dull, the vicar droning on about how he was driving against the traffic in a one way street: ''When a policeman hailed me and said you're going the wrong way! now isn't that what we're all doing in life?........'' So i envy our American cousins and the fun they seem to have in church. And god bless Ry Cooder for breathing new life into old tunes. 1
rgs2001uk Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Good gawd BN, thats shocking, thankfully these days in good ole blighty you could have got social servies involved LOL, or even the good ole European Court of Human Rights, I trust you didnt suffer any emotional damage, you aint psychologically scarred for life are you, get a lawyer onto it asap. Anyway continuing with the religious theme, the second best band ever to come out of the land of oz. Thankfully as an atheist I can sit back in the lounger and ponder over the lyrics to this masterpiece. 1
rgs2001uk Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Check out the name of this LP, Australias finest. Utterly brilliant stuff, Buffalo, got to esacape the blues man dont you know? Buffalo wings, one of the best foods ever invented. The Church one of the BEST bands ever,
rgs2001uk Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 One of the few tunes I can listen to from this lot.
bannork Posted December 23, 2014 Author Posted December 23, 2014 rgs,555 re social services, I read today fat bast...ds can now claim obesity as a disability, lol, may as well go back to blighty and claim an allowance for my drinking beer 'disability'. Perhaps I could start smoking again and go for the emphysema special payment. Hopefully they can transfer the funds to Thailand..... I liked the track by Garbo Szabo, never heard of him before, thanks for that. I've always loved Traffic but I reckon the gas fitter from Sheffield took this to a new level.
Patsycat Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 How do i put two different u-toob vids in the same post?
bannork Posted December 23, 2014 Author Posted December 23, 2014 How do i put two different u-toob vids in the same post? If you're using a computer Patsy then just the same as a single video, just lower the first video down the screen with the mouse ( presuming you're using share- media-upload)
Patsycat Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 That song became sexy Scottish Wet Wet Wet.... http://youtu.be/1OyRVjMcJLY

There are some songs which are classics, and when they are sung, they are sung. It is very rare for any singer to do cover versions of any George Jones songs, because in country music there is no other singer comes close to him. Elvis and Roy Orbison are the same in pop music. Personally I can't think of any covers of songs that are better than the original. But that's just my opinion.
bannork Posted December 27, 2014 Author Posted December 27, 2014 Good points above possum, Elvis and Scotty Moore revolutionized Mystery Train, The Band's version with Paul Butterfield is great too.
bannork Posted December 27, 2014 Author Posted December 27, 2014 A lovely tune, with and without instruments
Patsycat Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 (edited) Happy New Year, i got a goodie . Oops, i thought you meant two musical people playing together. Well it's good anyway. Alcohol does addle your brain. Edited January 4, 2015 by Patsycat
bannork Posted January 4, 2015 Author Posted January 4, 2015 It's got to be said, The Stones really ripped this number off, at least Johnny Winter left his own stamp on it. http://youtu.be/K6_6-9EigI0
pgrahmm Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Roy Orbison - Crying (Live 1964): KD Lang & Roy Orbison - Crying: 1
