Don't delay polls too long, Banharn warns

BANGKOK: -- FORMER PRIME minister Banharn Silapa-archa's New Year's wish is for the post-coup general election to materialise no later than next year

"I think the soonest the election will take place is 2016. It should not be delayed past that," he said yesterday.

The political statesman also warned that certain proposals for the new constitution could lead to confusion in the country, such as dropping the clause for members of Parliament to be affiliated with a political party.

"I believe there will certainly be problems in the future if politicians do not have to belong to any political party," he said.

Proponents of the change from the previous charter believe that the requirement caused lawmakers to be too dependent on their party.

Banharn, 82, said he had trust in the post-coup government led by Prayut Chan-o-cha.

The retired general is efficient and running the country well, he said.

"I have no advice for General Prayut. He is much better than me and is well aware of the problems. He is already doing a good job.

"What I would like to say is that it is not easy being a prime minister. Being at the top of the command chain, you also have to work in tandem with people at the implementation level," he said.

Banharn, who is chief adviser to the Chart Thai Pattana Party, welcomed visitors to his Bangkok residence, which is in the Charan Sanitwong area.

Politicians from the former coalition party and senior bureaucrats were among those calling on Banharn to wish him a happy new year.

Former energy minister Pichai Naripthaphan, however, was less impressed with the government, particularly its economic team, saying it has no clear achievements to its credit after three months in power.

"Its performance with the economy is not successful," he said.

Most of the economic figures released by the government suggest things are better than the actual situation.

"This led to over-expectations and later disappointment by the people," said Pichai, who is a politician from the Pheu Thai Party, which led the coalition government before the coup.

This guy was PM for a year 20 years ago. But the Thais still perceive his tainted view as being important.

You did not counter a single thing he said. Instead, you attacked him as an elderly person.

Ad hominem, and disgusting attacks.

They say that old politicians never die, they just fade away, but this guy, a pre-historic politician,

refuses to away... he once changed his date of birth to be an auspicious one... I kid you not....

Banharn's opinion is worthless, he once said being in the Opposition meant a dry tbroat. Once he's gone so will his utterly self centred party.

Don't delay polls too long, Banharn warns

"Yes, don't delay them too long, I get a lot of satisfaction manipulating elections and horse-trading my support and supporters' votes."

"I believe there will certainly be problems in the future if politicians do not have to belong to any political party," he said.

He's an old school <deleted>. He wants political control centered in the hands of a few 'party bosses' so that elected MPs will be more obligated to follow the party line than represent the active interests of their own constituencies. These old Thai politicians behave as if Thai politics is The Ring and the more they are around it the more they can't get away from it. Smeagol Banharn, should have retired from even commenting on politics fifteen years ago.

It doesn't really matter. Next elections will mean nothing. All power will be in the fully military appointed Senate which will make law, remove PM at its will, cancel laws made by the Parliament etc..

A chinese style Politburo.

Lets get the mix right , It is all very well calling for elections but are systems in place to correctly carry out the government's mandate without interference, there needs to be far reaching reforms and to be pushing buttons for early polls reminds me of hidden agendas, certainly the CDC method is counter productive to the invisage Democracy that the people thought they would get , after all it is a rehashed Junta in drag. coffee1.gif

"Former energy minister Pichai Naripthaphan, however, was less impressed with the government, particularly its economic team, saying it has no clear achievements to its credit after three months in power"

Another PTP genius speaks out. And what, after nearly 3 years in office were the Shin government's achievements? Billions of baht lost and seemingly unaccounted for, an new passport issued illegally to a criminal fugitive in the midst of the worst and mismanaged flood in living memory, nearly plunging the country into civil war in a crude attempt to whitewash the crimes of said criminal fugitive, and admitting freely they lied when they wanted to. Oh yes, but the Shin family fortune did increase 450% and Thaksin got his previously frozen money back.

Do you have any comment on the article? or just fancied an irrelevant rant.

Banharn most ''creative'' politicians that this country has to suffer over the years.

His nickname ,''The slippery Eel '"" says it all, one of the most corrupt politicians ever to hold office.

He regulary sold his party and his allegiance to the highest bidders over the years more times than a whores drawers would go up and down on pay day.

All he is concerned about is , 'How much is in it for me?"

The dying agonies and wails of agony of a political dinosaur who in reality is not nor ever was a raptor but nothing more than parasitical creature ( leech) who happily fed on the financial feed stock of Thailand and its peoples.

And this is different to all political parties since, how?

And:

The political statesman also warned that certain proposals for the new constitution could lead to confusion in the country, such as dropping the clause for members of Parliament to be affiliated with a political party.

"I believe there will certainly be problems in the future if politicians do not have to belong to any political party," he said.

Option A: Choose your candidate on it's sated platform orrrr, having been elected and reneged on a period not exceeding ONE year, declare 'null and void' and disbar.

Option B: Totalinarism in perpetuity.

Choose your poison coffee1.gif

What have your dear Dems achieved after been handed government (not elected) and want have your dear leader achieved. The problem in this country is not red vs yellow its right against wrong, justice vs injustice, equality vs inequality, education vs indoctrination, morality vs immorality etc etc. Untill people like you can't get rid of your fear and hate of certain people the country can't move forward. Just on a small point, why havent your dear leader cancelled TS's passport ?

Think the warning was more like "we are missing out on our rightful access to the corruption trough" and "if we don't hurry up, the populous might get to like the idea of less corruption and family controlled politics"

Baoboxers comment is well relevant, it's just that you don't like his comment, it doesn't suit your colour.
