NLA: No obstacles encountered so far in impeachment cases

BANGKOK, 12 January 2015 (NNT) - The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) said it has yet to draw a conclusion on the number of questions to be raised in the pending impeachment cases against former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and former House and Senate speakers.

Dr Jate Sirataranont, a member of the NLA and spokesman of the NLA whip, said it is still not certain how many queries should be raised in the impeachment cases of Miss Yingluck, former House speaker Somsak Kiatsuranont, and former Senate speaker Nikom Wairatpanij.

The case against Miss Yingluck was forwarded to the NLA by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) which recommended that the former Premier be charged for her negligence in the notorious rice pledging scheme that saw a tremendous financial loss and for allowing corruption to take place under her administration.

Meanwhile, former House and Senate speakers are facing charges for their involvement in an attempt to amend the Senate Origin bill.

Dr Jate went on to say that the deliberation process of these cases will be in accord with the timeframe set by the NLA president, adding that the number of queries will be concluded on Jan 15-16. So far, he said, the assembly has not yet encountered any obstacles while urging members of the public to closely follow updates of these cases as the lawmakers will be explaining them in detail, in a bid to prevent future misunderstanding.

If the NLA rules for impeachment, will Yingluck be able to appeal to the Constitutional Court? Or would the NCPO consider itself the highest law of the land under the Provisional Charter and accept an appeal for determination? In either case it would be an absurdity of Justice.
