BANGKOK: -- A male elephant destroyed a park-operated restaurant in Khao Yai National Park yesterday.

Park officers assume the elephant, called “Duan” by some, was hungry when he became the third elephant to go on a rampage at the park by smashing the windows and walls and generally looting the place Monday, according to Kanchit Srinoppawan, Head of Khao Yai staff members.

Staff took over three hours to shoo Duan the elephant, believed to be about 30, back to the forest.

I hope they crush all the cheap, ugly restaurants at the park. Give these animals their home back.

  • You slaughter us for our ivory tusks. You steal our children. You beat us with spikes to make us submit to your will. You tether us with chains in elephant camps and do not care when we show distress.

  • It is their environment and their home. They can do what they want, whenever they want and to whatever they want.

Park officers assume the elephant … was hungry when he … generally looted the place ...

For what? Fried rice? Crispy pork with kale? Noodle soup, maybe?

Gives a whole new meaning to "Drive Thru" ...............rolleyes.gif

'Looting the place'? So he's a thief, is he?

Someone must have upset the status quo in there as all the bulls seem to be going nuts. Problem is, with the design of an elephant's face giving off a permanent smile (much like the bottle-nose dolphin), Thais think they're always happy. Need to get a pachyderm shrink up there, quick!

Nature hits back. At least they didn't immediately attack the creature with hoes and machetes like some angry mob of villagers (ever watched a 'Frankenstein' movie?) routinely do when a hungry pachyderm comes out of the pitiful remains of a degraded forest and destroys their fields - which they planted in the immediate vicinity of the elephant's habitat in the first place, often enough encroaching on it, too.

"Staff took over three hours to shoo Duan the elephant, believed to be about 30, back to the forest. However, he came back again at 9am, so officers decided to feed it."

Yeah, I'm kind of seeing a flaw in this strategy.

You tether us with chains in elephant camps and do not care when we show distress. You drag us around city streets amidst the noisy and polluting traffic, begging bananas from tourists. You humiliate us by allowing stupid fat ignorant tourists to ride on our backs all day in the sweltering sun. We have had enough.

We are Elephant. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.

I was laughing, because the elephant just followed Prayut's guidelines about removing encroachers from land rightfully his!!

As for encounters with elephants, I have had my fair share. For more than 3 years I drove through an elephant reservation every day. Since I drove at dusk, where the animals become active, at least twice a week I met elephants walking on/ blocking the road. But you learn how to handle the situation by using common sense and a great deal of respect for the shire size of the animal!!

So don't you worry, I will (mods permitted) be around for a while to pick on you!!wai2.gif

Doesn't take long on this site, does it ... coffee1.gif

Listen! we elephants and other animals are sick and tired of you tourist coming to our park with your loud music, honking your horns, shouting and screaming, throwing your plastic bottles and bags into our habitat. and your silly little restaurants throwing your stinking garbage around. Just go away and leave us alone, especially when our girlfriends are on heat and us guys want to do our thing.

It is their environment and their home. They can do what they want, whenever they want and to whatever they want.

Ahem.... is the Elephant displaying his Thainess??

When is Thailand going to wake up and realize not ALL elephants can be tolerated as pets anymore around people. They need to take the unruly elephants, tranquilize them and move them somewhere where they cannot cause harm or put them in a zoo. Keep treating them as if people can co-exists with them and more and more people and property will be hurt or damaged. The elephant will always win.

This is the same situation they face with grizzly bears in the national parks in the US. They deal with the misbehaving bears and if they cannot be moved or otherwise dealt with then they are unfortunately put down. It's either them or us.

looks to me like the elephant is in musk. do you see that black line running up from the mouth?

If he is in musk he just wanted a chang girl.

...one has to wonder if the elephants are not being neglected.....

...or their habitats being impinged upon......

Officers do what they know and what works for them: they bribe him

I'm with them, get the people out of their habitat, stop destroying their habitat, leave them in peace.

It is in a National Park and the elephant is not a pet. But it is possible it's habitat is being impinged,

Whahaha, splendid! Yes, it would be really funny if it weren't so sad to see the last elephants going mental because of the severe pressure they are under.

"Too much pressure, this pressure has got to stop!"
