SRT approves 400 million baht budget to build railroad crossing barricades

BANGKOK: -- The State Railway of Thailand has approved a budget of around 400 million baht to construct over 200 rail crossing barricades so as to ensure safe crossing by vehicles.

The approval came after frequent fatal accidents on rail crossings which have no barricade.

The latest incident early this month involving collision of a pickup truck by a train killing two persons in Udon Thani province.

Of the over 200 rail crossings across the country without barricades and warning signals, seven will be built in Udon Thani.

SRT deputy governor Kamol Tangchitcharoenchai currently there are 775 rail crossings which have no barricades and they are poised to high risk of accidents.

With the allotted budget, over 200 crossings will now be installed with barricades and will be finished end of this year.

The first barricade will be installed at the crossing at Ban Non-udompattana in Udon Thani province, and expected to be finished before Songkran festival.

There are a total of 58 rail crossings in Udon Thani, with 15 of them already installed with barricades. Seven barricades will be installed this year, he added

this will not make any difference, it will not stop them from driving/riding around the barricades or simply making their own crossing where they want it. Unfortunately many thai drivers have no patience and will refuse to wait, red lights make no difference, why should barricades

Well, maybe the barricades will at least knock some unattentive motorcyclists off their bikes saving them from being run over by the train. And if there are plenty of flashing lights and loud bell sounds on the barricades that should stop most (not all) of the cars and trucks.

I am a little worried about the translation here. If we are talking about controlled crossings with lights, bells, gates, etc and people to man them, then surely there are more than 200 danger spots across the country. If we are talking about "barricades" (fences to stop people and vehicles crossing where they shouldn't), then someone is going to make a lot of money at $60,000 for each one of them.

The people at SRT are really geniuses ; Without knowing exactly how many crossings, what barriers to construction exist and possible transportation

logistics they are able to quote 400 million to complete this task. What is even more incredible is that this huge budget, without specifying what will be done, where. how. the expenditure was approved ! !

So very true. I got stopped at a crossing in Pattaya a few months ago. The barriers were coming down and this idiot of a motor cyclist decided he was going to ignore this. He \got his just reward when the barrier hit him on the head knocking him off his bike. Fortunately for him, he was wearing a helmet so was unhurt.

Therein lies the difference. When the crossing barriers are completed with all the bells and whistles, those humans that manage to find a way around and at the same time are hit by a train will receive no sympathy from me or most people.

Common sense, a somewhat rare commodity it seems, is all that is required when in the vicinity of trains and moving traffic and in fact most moving equipment..

It is referred to as an awareness of your surroundings. This will hopefully relieve SRT of liability when deaths occur at crossings.

Trains do not suddenly leap out of the bushes and kill people. People get hit by trains because they were being stupid trying to 'beat' the train in order to save a minute or two or not paying attention.

A better solution to rail crossing is to create underpasses, where possible, or bridges as an alternative.

400 million is a nice round figure. Sounds much more impressive than B323,950,000
