Audio books for the blind, on a tablet/iPad?

Featured Replies

In the old days it was easy for a blind person to insert a cassette tape

and start playing it. Then stop and restart where they left off, next time

I am looking for a way to play audio books on a tablet

so that a partially sighted old man can manage on his own

He has macular degeneration, and is legally blind

but retains some peripheral vision

I can get books for him from the internet, but the player part is

stumping me

Any suggestions

He already has an IPad in the house.

You should E Mail the National Federation of the Blind or The American Council of the Blind. Google them.

They should be able to offer suggestions from people who deal with this sort of thing every day.

You can still use cassettes, they still make 'em.

Perhaps the best is to use Google Microsoft or Samsung S voice.

He can say "Play audio Huckleberry fin" and it'll play

On a Samsung phone this can be activated by pressing the main key - or try an HTC One M8, which has amazing speakers.

If he's blind he can find these keys or the Apple key.

Like t8769 just suggest it to you.... use the voice command. I heard that the apple's one, SIRI ?, is pretty good. You may have to set itt up for him, install several audio book, make sure the ordrer are recognize then after he can do it alone.

I wonder if a CD will re-commence playing from where it was last halted?

This happens with movies.

Thanks I will follow up on that suggestion

Not sure how I would record cassette tapes from my computer

without a lot of fiddle

I downloaded Project Ray on my phone, but it does not really seem to work

even for me a sighted person

We don't really want to buy new hardware so the dedicated phone is not on
