After grudgingly paying $60 for a T-Mobile prepaid sim during a trip to the US last Sept, I was delighted to discover H2O Wireless last month during Christmas vacation. For $10 you get access to ATT's GSM network with 200 min talk or text and 100 MB data. It's good for 90 days. No contract and no hidden fees. Their other prepaid plans can be seen here.

You can pick up their sim cards at places like 7-11 and Target, but they probably cost a few dollars just for the sim card alone. Or you can do like I did and order one for a penny from Amazon. Just search for 'h2o wireless sim' and you will see several resellers selling them for a penny with free shipping. They likely get a commission when you pay for a plan.

I have no complaints with the service. Cannot roam in Canada but no big deal. For $10 it was great.

Thanks for the info. Wish I had known about this. I just got back after spending 3 weeks there and only had use of landline or my mom's phone geared for seniors which can take messages but she forgot her password. When the landline went out on Dec. 30 due to storm I could only call people but when she had the phone I never knew if they returned my call. I wasn't able to make plans for New Year's Eve as a result. Will use it on my next trip.

Does anyone know of similar "throw away" SIMs being offered for free at Bangkok or Phuket airport? A friend of mine said they were offered to tourists (I presume anyone who arrives on a plane) for free and give you a few minutes of air-time, no need to be registered.

Anyone any knowledge of this?

I find it slightly incredible given the latest "Get your SIM registered" drive by the government, with the threat of the SIM being disabled in 6 months' time if not registered.
