BANGKOK: -- The Criminal Court today sentenced Jatuporn Promphan, leader of the redshirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, two years in prison after finding him guilty of defaming former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva in October 2009.

The court handed the imprisonment term with no abstention when he accused the former premier of ordering the suppression of protesters while addressing a gathering of anti-government protest on October 11, 2009 at the Democracy Monument.

The court also found that his accusation that the former premier Abhisit had attempted to delay submission of the amnesty bill for royal approval for fugitive premier Thaksin Shinawatra was false and would merely defame his reputation.

Jatuporn was consulting his lawyer to pose 200,000 baht in asset as bail for temporary release.

His lawyer was also considering to appeal the sentence to the Appeals Court.

Thai 'Red Shirt' leader sentenced to two years in jail

AFP

BANGKOK: -- A Thai court Wednesday sentenced a leader of the opposition Red Shirt movement to two years in prison for defaming a former premier, in a move analysts said was the latest attack against critics of the military regime.

The ruling comes days after the retroactive impeachment and announcement of corruption charges against ex-prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, whose toppled government was backed by the Red Shirts before May's army coup.

The court convicted Jatuporn Prompan on two counts of defamation against former royalist prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva during speeches he made in October 2009.

"The verdict is two years in prison without suspension," a court official told AFP.

Jatuporn, chairman of the Red Shirts, has faced a slew of court cases including for slander in recent years.

His lawyer Wiyat Chatmontree confirmed the sentencing and said his client is applying for bail.

"We have posted 200,000 baht ($6,000) for bail and the court will rule this afternoon," he said.

Thailand analyst David Streckfuss told AFP the ruling was the latest attempt to quash any opposition to the military regime.

"It seems to be part of a larger plan by the Bangkok establishment to silence and force aside their vocal critics," he said.

Yingluck was impeached by a junta-stacked parliament last Friday, leading to an automatic five-year ban from politics. She had been forced out of office in a controversial court ruling before the military's coup.

The same day she was impeached, prosecutors announced corruption charges that could see her face a decade in jail.

Experts say the move against Thailand's first female premier and the sister of former leader Thaksin Shinawatra is the latest attempt by the country's royalist elite, and its army backers, to nullify the political influence of the Shinawatras.

Thailand's long-running political conflict broadly pits Bangkok's middle-class and royalist elites, backed by parts of the military, against rural and working-class voters loyal to Thaksin.

Parties led by or aligned to the Shinawatras have won every election in Thailand since 2001.

Are the courts making a statement or are they making an example , we all remember motor mouth Jatuporn, , if the PTP ever become a political party again they must remember to tick all the boxes , brain dead idiots must not apply , however I think that former P.M. Abhist had more than this to contend with, 2 years for this or was it for a combination other outbursts as well.coffee1.gif

He really deserves some jail time, but unfortunately it won't happen. People in this level of society here don't get real punishments. 20 years of appeals until it's all forgotten.

I really hope he will do his jail time

btw. Nattawut?

and wasn't Potjaman convicted, too?

What, even though this case began before the coup?

If snow white is poisoned now, it's the military.

And prince charming USA would come galloping.

Court gives UDD member Jatuporn suspended jail term

BANGKOK, 28 Jan 2015 (NNT) – The Criminal Court has handed down a suspended jail term to former MP and core member of the National United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) Jatuporn Prompan, after having ruled that he was guilty of defaming former PM Abhisit Vejjajiva

Jatuporn, who faced a defamation lawsuit filed by the former PM and Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, was earlier sentenced to imprisonment of six months and a fine of 50,000 baht by the Civil Court for having accused the complainant of suppressing and killing people during his premiership.

The UDD core member later lodged an appeal against the ruling with the Appeal Court. Judges decided to uphold the previous ruling by the Civil Court on the grounds that Mr. Jatuporn criticized Mr. Abhisit out of hatred and anger and without solid proof.

The judges, however, were of the opinion that Mr. Jatuporn’s statement had not truly tarnished Mr. Abhisit’s reputation and verbal conflicts were common among politicians. The Court thus decided to hand a two-year suspended jail term to Mr. Jatuporn and ordered him to publish the ruling in newspapers for seven days.

The leading UDD member must also lodge bail of two million baht with authorities.

I am not sure which one is the most "one sided"... BBC or AFP. Would be nice to get balanced news.

Here is some more happy news for the Yellows to chew on as quoted from asiaone new today:

“Last Friday, its bid to impeach her sailed through the military-appointed assembly.Hours later, its chairman was quoted by local broadcaster Thai PBS as declaring commitment to its bid to impeach another 306 former parliamentarians, most of them from Ms Yingluck's Puea Thai party.”

Is anymore evidence of a political biased purge needed?
