Hi guys.

I was just wondering what the situation is with applying for Thai and international driving licenses when you're on an ed visa.

Because I'm not resident of the UK any more, I cannot get a driving license there.

I am planning on going travelling in 7 weeks, and really need a license for Europe, UK, USA, etc.

Also, I am wondering how long the thai license, and international license process takes IF it is applicable to me.

Thanks in advance!

First of all, since you're an UK citizen, on very same day you that land back in your country, you have the right to apply for a driver license (right of abode). Your tax paying status, or even national health service status, etc has nothing to do with that.

About the Thai license this is not the right forum, however in general you can be issues a time limited (one year) driver license and then the international one, the latter is a just a formality.

Is your current permission to stay the arrival stamp giving you 90 days when you arrived in Thailand, or is it an extension of stay from the immigration office?

The first Thai DL is a 1 year temporary license which you can NOT get an IDP for this can only be had when you have a 5 year Thai DL.

I am moving this topic from the forum "Thai visas, residency and work permits" to the "Thailand Motor Forum"

Great! I did call the DVLA and they said I had to be resident to apply for a driving license, so I took it that I can't. If I can apply back in the UK it would be a great weight off my mind. PS. my provisional license has run out also. PPS. Yeah I'm not resident of the UK, for obvious reasons.

To obtain an IDP one first must have a 5 year license, And those are only issued after the validity of the temporary (1 year) license has run out. Also officially for a 5 year license a extension of stay is required.

The OP can not get an IDP in Thailand.
