Wifi in the sticks

Featured Replies

I need wifi. Who are the best? I'm only 9 km from Phahat Nikhom and about 2km from Ko Pho. No phone line and none around. Whats the best way to get decent wifi. Mobile data is ok but for downloading or sending reasonable sized files its no use. Any Ideas?

Let's move this to Technology.

Out in the sticks your best bet for internet is TOT WiNET which is a WiMax type solution, talk to your local TOT office.

AIS and TRUE do similar services if you fail with TOT

When you say you need wifi, is there any available wifi networks around you which you could connect too? or do you mean you need to sign up to an ISP internet connection and get a wifi rooter to give your house wifi?

If you do have wifi connections in range, I would advise getting a USB wifi adapter with an SMA connection port, then you can also purchase a 12DBI wifi antenna plugging it into the SMA port giving you better range,

For example:

You can find better antenna`s in some IT shops,

Now for a short time fix, you could get a mifi device and stick an antenna on that giving you good mobile download speeds, yet your going to have to pay alot as you wont get masses of data, I think AIS offer the best amount of data for the price something like 12gb (might be wrong) but really you can soon hoover that up downloading so this is only a short term fix.

Cheers

You can also try CAT for a desktop internet receiver like the one pictured.

I had it on the farm, gives 2.5 GB download speeds for approx 800 baht per month.

Worked great

2.5gbps? I think you might mean 2.5mbps wink.png

TOT Winet and AIS Airnet are capable of 15KM+ range, with packages up to 30mbps - that's where I think the OP should be focussing.

I'm not familiar with True's long-range wifi product - do you have any details?

Sadly no, I remember (I think) getting a flyer some time back when we installed WiNet.

We live well away from any cable internet access so up till now have been relying on TrueMove-H internet SIM (very poor service) but just yesterday I heard about a "new" service from CAT where the subscriber apparently paid a one-off fee of 37,000 Baht for a home wifi receiver mast/antenna plus router installation then about 700 Baht/month for unlimited data at up to 20mbps.

I'm going to try to get more info from the local CAT office but I wondered if any posters have experience of this service?

Live in Ayutthaya we have wireless ToT. Pretty fast actually ,

Sound very similar to TOT Winet, except the setup fee is 10x more expensive.

Still use an AirCard with a DTAC unlimited sim......

Was pretty "kruppy" for a long time but been fairly consistant for at least the last 6 Months....obviously not Wi-Fi.

What ever happened to the OP, who needed "WiFi"?

Thats ok but it isn't unlimited, I think your speeds is capped right down after 12gb of data, for most 12gb is enough data yet when downloading films and streaming your tv online 12gb would last me about a week.

Be careful about paying the 37k,, we were told the same by CAT when the guy from their office arrived saying too far from signal, only option to pay the 37k to get internet (we're just under 4 km line of sight from tower) we then asked TOT for a site survey, the guy who came to do the survey was a contractor who happened to also do the site surveys for CAT too, he told us TOT signal was ok but CAT was much stronger, we then had to call the cat office to re-request the site survey to be done again, now with CAT installed for approx 6 months all appears to be well
