Sitting on the plane ready to take off for BKK. At Siem Reap Airport.

I did the web check in on my com earlier today and printed my boarding pass.

Please correct me if i am wrong but i thought the whole idea of web check in was so that you can arrive at the Airport and head straight for security. No need to go to the check in counter. At Siem Reap you have to get a stamp at the counter before going to security check. Web check in seems like a waste of time.

Not necessarily, depends on the carrier/airport, with some wanting to verify credit cards/documents. Some will let those without baggage who've already checked in online to go right through to security. I do it where possible to be able to select seats and it's quicker at the check-in desk for those already having the boarding pass. Of course, I spent that time doing the process this end, but often there are designated 'online check-in' desks that are much faster.

the only point I can is getting to book your seat. Often web check in q is longer than normal and I have never used the print outs, they just give you a normal boarding pass anyway so printing them out has been pointless

Whenever I'm traveling international I use web checkin.

It saves a lot of time at the airport as it allows you to avoid sometimes long check-in queues. I just go to the bag drop counter where most times there will only be one person ahead of me.

I rarely print out the boarding pass. I just show the pass on my smart phone or my frequent flyer card and they issue a boarding pass at the bag drop check in. Whenever I pre print a boarding pass the bag drop counter issues a new pass anyway.

Best thing around web checkin. If you have bags, you have to check them right? What that means in large airports there are web checkin lines where you can bypass the cattle lines with a hundred or more people in airports like The Swamp.

whistling.gif De[ends on what country you are talking about and the baggage check-in and security requirements in that country.

in the U.S., for example, it is MUCH more convenient to do a on-line pre check-in for most airline trips as it simplifies:

  1. Baggage check-ins (often at curbside befoire you even enter the airport building area)
  2. Security (pre-clear with TSA security checks if you are a "frequent traveler"). Your checked bags can be "pre-cleared"
  3. Check-in (in many airports you can just scan your pre-printed bording pass and/or passport then head strraight to the security check and departure gate area.)

To be fair, not all intrnational airports, and especially Asian aiports have yet adopted such procedures.

But it is entirely possible to take a flight from Boston to San Francisco on United Airlines without even talking to a check-in desk person by pre-checking on-line.

That includes check-in baggage, but your check-in bags will need to be scanned (x-rayed).

As i said, that may not be possible in Asia, expectually for foriegn passengers.

But it is common in the U.S.

Web check-in is not perfect yet but it's a key step in the airlines goal of complete automation. Although they are very unlikely to achieve 100% automation they ideally want to have as few ground-staff as possible to achieve fewer costs hence more profit. They are all heading in that direction, no choice if they wish to remain competitive.

Lets just hope the cockpit crew will still always have a pulse and not a chip smile.png
