Hi all.

Hoping someone can help me.

I'm a British citizen my husband is Thai. we came to the UK in October 2010 on a spouse visa. we then renewed that with a FLR visa. this is due to expire in March. I'm just a bit unsure about which visa he needs now? he can't pass the life in the UK test as his English isnt good enough. Is it still a FLR visa he needs and if so which category?

Thanks for reading.

In the past governments of both parties have talked about limiting the number of times someone can apply for Further Leave to Remain before they have to either apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain or leave the UK.

To apply for ILR your husband needs not only the LitUK test but B1 in English speaking and listening as well.

So far this talk has come to nothing, but who knows what the future may hold.

Even if it never happens, surely paying for a suitable English course will be cheaper than paying for FLR every two years; current fee for a postal application being £601, but this will increase in April and every April after that.

For more details on FLR, and a link to the application form, see Apply to remain in the UK with family

For the life in the UK test my wife practised mock tests online everyday, (something to do with the publishers of a study book), her English was good, and she never needed to pass any English test, but the point is she didn't really understand the questions, but she knew the answers and put 2 and 2 together she passed first time. and now has a UK passport, good luck with your visa's etc.

Edit sorry your Husbands visa's

Hi.

Thanks for the replies. I will use FLR(M) as suggested.

I know the sensible option is to do the litUK test but my husband's English reading and writing is very poor. He was having ESOL classes but we have since moved areas and I have only just looked into finding these in our local area. Thanks for giving me the kick up the bum that I need to try and get this sorted.

BTW I dont know if you remember me 7by7 but you helped me out with my husbands visa 5 years ago after we were originally refused, and this June after doing a 3 year degree and a 1 year PGCE I finally qualified as a 'real' teacher! So thanks again for all your help. xxxx
