BANGKOK: -- Bangkok's China Town will celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year with grandest ceremonies as it marks three important events - the 60th birthday anniversary of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the 40th anniversary of Thailand- China relations, and the 11th anniversary of cooperation between the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Chinese Ministry of Culture.

The Chinese New Year celebration will be hosted by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) in the capital’s China Town on Yaowarat Road between February 19-20.

The grand celebration will be dedicated to the 60th birthday anniversary of the Princess.

It also will commemorate the 40th anniversary of national relations with China, and the 11th anniversary of cooperation between the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Chinese Ministry of Culture.

According to BMA, China’s Ministry of Culture has presented Thailand with three white jade goat statues to mark the year of the goat on the Chinese zodiac.

The statues were carved from a single piece of jade stone.

Each statue stands at 1.6 metres tall and weighs roughly three tons.

They have been put on display in front of the entrance of the Royal Jubilee Gate at Odeon Circle.

The Chinese Embassy has already scheduled special cultural shows comprising a total of 180 Chinese performers from 10 provinces with be performing at the event.

Other interesting activities during the Chinese New Year festival include the sale of local Thai products and food, as well as concerts put on by various Thai artists.

China Town area will also be separated into four show zones that will feature life in the royal palace. The street will be decorated in gold with elaborate lighting fixtures to create a veritable tunnel of light.

The celebration will run from noon to midnight.

Celebration will cover from the Royal Jubilee Gate to the entire Yaowarat road.

11th anniversary of cooperation between the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Chinese Ministry of Culture.

Perhaps TAT can cooperate further get the CMC to instill even a modicum of culture into the uncultured hordes of tourists that keep flooding southwards?? whistling.gif

Interesting in what way - sale of Thai products and food in Thailand? Sale of Chinese products and food would be more "interesting."

Interesting that the ethnic Chinese elite are feeling confident enough - cocky enough- to mount a major celebration of their Chinese identity this year. Normally Chinese New Year is quite quiet and understated as the Elite tries to stress its 'Thainess'

Other interesting activities during the Chinese New Year festival include the sale of local Thai products and food.

Well, what a surprise. You sure don't see this very often in Thailand. coffee1.gif

sense some jealousy from some posters as it's chinese culture that is being celebrated.
