Ex-PM keen to speak to someone with power

BANGKOK: -- PRIME MINISTER Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday rejected a call for him to have talks with former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as part of the efforts to achieve national reconciliation.

Thaksin, however, has said he is ready for such talks, a Pheu Thai Party source said yesterday. The ex-PM's only condition was that he wanted to talk to someone with the power to make decisions, so that any agreement reached can be put into practice, the source said. "Thaksin has been fooled many times already. Such talks often failed in the past, so he wants people with actual power to talk with him," the source said.

Thaksin wants the country to be peaceful and to move forward, the source said.

Prayut said that as a state official, he was not permitted by law to meet with someone wanted by the authorities for legal prosecution. And he would be unable to send anyone else to meet Thaksin on his behalf, as that also was against the law.

"I can't talk with anyone wanted by law. It's because I am a state official," he said. He was referring to the offence of dereliction of duty."Don't forget that Khun Thaksin has legal problems. Do you think I can talk to him?"

Prayut was responding to questions from a reporter in response to a suggestion by National Reform Council (NRC) member Wanchai Sornsiri for him to meet the ex-PM as part of the efforts to achieve reconciliation.

Thaksin has been in self-exile overseas since fleeing the country in 2008, just before the Supreme Court sentenced him in absentia to two years in jail for abuse of power.

Prayut said all people who have fled the country who want national reconciliation should return to Thailand and re-enter the justice process. For him, Thaksin could take part in the reconciliation process by returning and contesting the cases against him.

He said he had reiterated many times that nobody should stay above the law and laws should be applied fairly to everyone.

Prayut said it would be difficult for him to explain to Thais throughout the country why an amnesty should be given to certain political figures who broke the law.

The PM is also leader of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), the junta that took power after the coup last May.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said yesterday that it was not the PM's duty to have talks with Thaksin.

"The prime minister's duty is to make sure the law is enforced," he said.

Prawit, who is also defence minister, said the National Reform Council had the duty to encourage reconciliation and should do whatever it sees fit to achieve that goal.

"The NRC may hold talks if that's necessary; we are ready to help. I think Khun Thaksin is also ready.

"General Prayut has repeatedly asked him to come back. The NRC should do whatever is necessary to achieve reconciliation," he said.

Prawit said he had never had talks with Thaksin while overseas.

Anek Laothamatas, a member of the Constitution Drafting Committee, voiced support to the idea of talks between Prayut and Thaksin. But he said there should also be talks between the PM and other parties. Anek has pushed for a pardon or amnesty for people in political conflicts who broke the law as part of the reconciliation process.

Meanwhile, NRC member Kamnoon Sidhisamarn, who is spokesman for the Constitution Drafting Committee, said he thought the chance of Prayut talking to Thaksin was very slim.

Here lies the question! If it's illegal for Prayuth to talk with Thaksin then why isn't YL being prosecuted for this right now and why was it permissible before.

Also, by Thaksin's own acknowledgement to Prayuths call to talk with someone with power he is admitting that he still controls the Reds and the UDD and is able to end the conflict.

This is the man the country needs to be rid of. Without him the volatile Red will be without support or leadership.

Come on now. In all the years of Thaksin's political activities, when has he employed this strategy? He is more given to speeches to his former power base than sending messages by way of junior message boys.

It suits the military administration's purposes to maintain the spectre of Thaksin. Distract the people from the current ineptitude and focus on an issue that will unite the core groups who supported the coup. Instill fear that all will be lost if the bogey man returns, find an enemy who can unite the dwindling support base and hold on to power as long as possible.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Thaksin isn't coming home anytime soon unless its for his funeral rites. Even if by some magical mystery the man was pardoned tomorrow, he would not return. It is unsafe for him to be in Thailand, and he is not one to risk his life. He would not consider a permanent return unless his supporters were running things and that will not happen for some time.

There is no need to keep bringing up the subject. He's not in Thailand, he's not coming back and his support base isn't what it used to be. It's over.

They tried that before in 2010. Red Shirt appointed leaders agreed a deal with Abhisit to end the insurgency. They got a SMS from Thaksin and defaulted on the agreement.

This time round, given all the cock ups the red shirt self appointed leaders and PTP puppets have made, Thaksin will want to handle it himself, not through the usual vassals.

Thaksin will want a full amnesty - outstanding charges, all 15 wiped clean, conviction wiped clean, bail jumping wiped clean, immunity for prosecution for anything else that emerges. In return he'll promise this, that and the other. Would you trust a proven liar, convicted fugitive, and someone who breaks his oaths at the drop of a hat?

If he ever got back, he's start doing exactly the same again - thieving, lying, intimidating and trying to seize power for himself.

You (and others) keep trotting out the "treason" and "against the law" taglines, when it fact, like it or not, as soon as the King endorsed and approved of the coup, it became 100% legal and no longer a coup, and no further legal or criminal actions can be taken against anyone involved, now or in the future.

I would have thought with all these statement from PT/UDD there is a sufficient evidence now to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Thaksin is still the man behind them all, finances them etc, and that anyone associating with or taking orders from him is breaking the law simply by talking to him.
