Well, if the letter does end up being fake and he does get deported home, I hear that there are some rebel held areas in northern Iraq where a so-called pornographer might receive a very special welcome...

yes absolutely, a pattaya resident pornographer deserves capitol punishment if not worse.

how dare him corrupting the morals of pattaya prostitutes let alone cutting into the profits of western pattaya pornographers.

How is this news, and why does anyone care he has a BB gun? Did they become illegal?

1: He tried to run off at a road check

2: The BB gun was found once they chased him

3: Further checking showed he had lived here illegally without a passport for 15 years

4: He had an outstanding arrest warrant.

Why then didn't the headline reflect this?

Because the entire story can't be put into a headline, perhaps?

Would this suit you better:-

"Refugee" Iraqi With An Outstanding Arrest Warrant Issued By The Pattaya Provincial Court On A Charge Of “participation of persons to make, produce, participate in obscene movies or other tape recordings” Who Lived In Thailand Illegally For 15 Years Caught With Illegally Concealed BB Gun By Pattaya Police Patrol After He Tried To Run From A Checkpoint.

Reads much better, doesn't it?

Some ancient, long-gone general wound up as PM somehow years ago and, in his exhaustive studies of farang culture saw this movie, and THAT my friends is why BB guns are illegal in Thailand.

But they are not illegal per se.

A BB gun in Pattaya ? I'd say he was substantially underarmed considering where he is ! Doesn't go well with the locals though, because all's fine and well when they're carrying the weapons, but wait a while me laddies......... ARNIES coming, UZI 9mm !!!!!!!!! Then you'll find out the benefits of wearing brown trousers................BB gun ??? Maybe he was practicing for Songkran ?

Another clueless headline then. Clearly the possession of the BB gun was not the critical element of the story.

I skimmed the article attempting to find why the BB gun was significant. Thinking that was the point of the article, so I skipped the stuff about his immigration issues which apparently was the story.

I agree. The headline makes it all about a BB gun and I wondered what the big deal is. Kudos to Petercool for having the patience to read all of it, LOL.

But more kudos to canuckamuck for reminding us what a reasonable assumption looks like. The fact that it was wildly incorrect is due entirely to the poor reporting.

Look up the word "reflect."

Yes, they had a reason to stop him but, as Canuckamuch asked, "HOW IS THIS NEWS?"

You just don't get it. BB guns are very serious. No—very, very serious. And this one was concealed. A very, very serious, SNEAKY BB gun. That's BIG news, buddy! If you don't like it...

I feel that the headline seems a bit of a 'bait & switch' move to pull readers in, as it did me...and, no doubt many. Maybe the tipoff was the small number of officers in the photo.

Possibly even very very very serious. rumor has it the man has already threatened a tin can and a sparrow.

The answer seems to be that if such guns propel pellets by air (and are thus more powerful) they must be cased in public places and a reason for carrying it is needed whereas there is more leniency for simple spring action ones.

Many things are sold but which are not legal to own without good reasons - police radios, walkie talkie systems, cross bows, switch blade knives, stun guns etc.

Household possession is considered differently than carrying such things also.

Just need to clear this up in my head.

If he holds a fake letter from the UN then they will be all over him but if it is real then he is a legitimate refugee and Thailand allowed him in without a passport on those grounds.

Secondly, he may be a Kurd because what type of person was claiming refugee status 15 years ago. If memory serves that was a long time before shock and awe and Saddam was still the boss.

As the the BB gun that is just schoolboy stupidity as is not stopping when asked to.

Saddam was ousted in the early 90's and from then till now is about 25 years and not 15. So Saddam may have played no role in his refugee status.

Speaking of BB guns, let me relate a story to you. My wife had a dental appointment in Lampang recently, so I wondered around in the near by stores. This one store was called The BB Gun Shop. So I went in to see what they had. I about shit my pants when I seen the BB guns they had. There must have been near 50 guns hanging on the walls and let me tell you they were all dead ringers to most of the automatic military weapons of today. No plastic toys, these were authentic looking. If a person was to walk around carrying one of those you damn sure would get the polices attention.

Refugee's are guests in the country that helps and supports them. If they cannot behave in a decent and legal way they should be warned.

If they continue to flout the law they should be returned to their country of origin.

People may well say that is condemning to prison or worse. That may well be true but it is their responsibility to be a decent citizen.

Get rid of the scumbag, he is just the tip of an iceberg claiming refugee status, with bull shit reasons, he is already wanted on warrants, and I am sure they will find other things should they search his premises, And no it is not just about the BB gun, who cares about that
