Hi all,

The main problem with Thailand, is it has gone big too quick. They opened Suvarnabhumi, closed Don Muang then re opened it for domestic flights.

Tourism has gone up, and Suvarnabhumi can't cope with high season demand from International flights thus Airlines like Etihad flying to Phuket instead of Bangkok.

The thing the Thai tourism people can't see is there are three types of tourists now.

Backpackers,

Sex Tourists (sorry I will be polite, single guys on an adventure)

Families.

Thus, Chiang Mai becoming more and more sex tourist after many complaints to get rid of Loh Kroh.

Why don't they re open Don muang to let airlines in from Europe to off load high season demand between October and april.

Use Don Muang for Charter flights from Europe and connect with islands via cheap carriers.

Keep Suvarnabhumi for all of Thailand and beyond.

These stop off airlines in middle east need to start thinking of using Don Muang as well as Suvarnabhumi.

All these low cost airlines need to fill empty seats in don muang.

Merge the low cost carriers with airlines that can't get many slots at suvarnabhumi.

In other words..

Lets make bangkok have 2 airports for the rest of the world like every city in the world.

Singapore and Hong Kong have only 1 airport - seem to do ok.

To cope with a high season demand, one needs a high season.

I have never met anyone who could not visit the place because the airport didn't have enough room.

Why not have Suvarnabhumi for flights coming into the Kingdom and Don Muang for flights going out ?

It would instantly increase airport throughput by 100% in both airports because instead of arrivals AND departures there'd only be one of each.

Why the "genius" Thai planners didn't consider this is beyond me.

I strongly disagree with your assumption

"The thing the Thai tourism people can't see is there are three types of tourists now.

Backpackers,

Sex Tourists (sorry I will be polite, single guys on an adventure)

Families."

You missed:

retirees

Long stay relatively affluent individuals who prefer it (or perhaps the cost of living) to elsewhere

Many individual guys/girls come here on an adventure and never visit the red light district or perhaps go out of curiosity but spend most of their time on the beach and site seeing. I suspect there is a lot less sex tourism than you think

And as has been pointed out many cities have only one airport, and I suspect many tourists like to fly direct to Phuket for their two week holiday and have no interest in visiting Bangkok, that said Bangkok already has two airports

(I just noticed you posted at 4am, its all making sense now)

Good idea. Then truck the planes from Swampy to Don Muang so that they can take off again......

How would that work then, same number of flights, therefore the same number of passengers but "airport throughput" doubles?

Suspect that quite a lot is beyond you based on your airports reorganisation plan.

Sounds like a great plan, get ready for AOT to be breaking down your door in order to offer you a contract.

Every city in the world apart from Bangkok has 2 airports? Which world is that?

Los Angeles only has one international airport.

Ontario is an international airport. So is Orange County, but it's technically in a different country. But still the greater LA area.

Unless something has recently changed, both are called international, but neither has immigration services.
