Buying Furniture

I'm looking to buy good quality funiture at a good price.I need to find regular suppliers who won't mess me about too much.

The furniture will be exported to Spain in 40 ft containers.

I'm based in Pattaya but have been advised to look around the Chiang Mai area for suppliers.

I will be coming up in the next couple of weeks and hope to skip the normal messers and wasters if I can.

Any contacts for furniture or freight forwarding would be appreciated.

Hey,

A friend of mine did what you are talking about. He went out to Ban Tawai (off Hang Dong Rd. ). Take someone along that speaks Thai, and you should be able to visit the factories that produce whatever you find there at the best prices.

I've seen things there that cost 5-600% more in BKK.

Va a buscar Ban Tawai por los precios mejor... :o:D

Not really an answere to your particular question about good quality, but for others who may be interested in 'regular' wooden furniture, you should definitely look into that area in Lamphun province where there are tons of factories and warehouses selling the stuff.

It's off the Chiang Mai - Lampang Superhighway, just after you pass the last traffic lights (Lamphun proper) where the road bends left towards the hills. Then it's a road/soi on the left.

Real cheap. Some crap around, but also some 'honest' basic heavy wooden furniture that's quite nice.

Cheers,

Chanchao

I am a member of a nother site like this one,

information posted there which maybe of help to locate furniture

Hands down the best place is Chiang Mai. Once there get a driver and show him the pics and ask him to take you to the area that makes this. I cant recall the name at the moment however, the street is packed with all kinds of furniture & antiques. Very cheap compared to Bangkok and Pattaya.HANGDONG

Im on the road but when I return on Monday Ill list some specific places in the Hangdong area of Chiang Mai.

"Sudaluk" is a good place to view the furniture, however, they are very expensive. Point out what you want and your driver will take you there.

I had a few places make some specific furniture and a few other places I bought off the floor. Sent a whole container back to the US packed with furniture and outdoor furniture.

PAN'S: Hangdong

SUDALUK: Sankhampaeng Rd

SORAVITKHONGKAO: Hangdong

CHAISILK ANTIQUE: Hangdong

CITY TEAK: 107/4 Moo 5, Chiangmai-Hod Rd.

CHIANGMAI GOLDEN EXPORT: Hangdong

THAI SIN: thaisin-woodcarving.com Hangdong

WORLD PORT: Sarapee Rd, Hangdong

BOONCHU SHOP: Night Bazaar ChiangMai.

Most of the places are located in the Hangdong area. Lots of slightly used and also new furniture. You can walk all day as the road goes for about 2-3 miles. Many shops along the road. Because the Ping river was a trading route with China there is lots of Chinese antiques & furniture also to be had there in Hangdong. Very cheap compared to USA. They also have a few replicas of old chinese furniture which looks real good. Always ask if you want the real stuff. Most vendors will say if they are copies. Many are copies.

The prices can vary and bargain hard.

Best bet is to get a driver. Stop on the road and walk, walk and more walk. Hit many of the shops and take notes of what you see and get their cards and write on the back of the card. When you are finished have the driver take you back and buy the furniture you want. There is a couple of Export place along the road too. Stop in and tell them you want to "Stage" your furniture there and have it shipped to Pattaya or whereever else you want. Then the shops can deliver it to the shipping company who will pack it for you and put it into a truck or container and bring it to Pattaya for you. Be aware if you are shipping Teak products there are problems involved.

Most teak products unless they are small trinkets might need so called "Certificates". There are many waays around this. Sometimes the shipper will say "no problem we will take care of it". You may have to "blanket cover" the shipment for a few thousand baht.

What happens is the Police will stop shipments on the freeway and as for a bribe or certificates. Not a big issue, but make sure you as if there is any problem with transporting the particular teak products to Pattaya.

In my case I paid Customs to "Seal the container" in ChiangMai. Basically it was inspected and sealed so the police dont open before shipment to USA. I paid 3000 baht tea money and had a 20' container pass muster. Prices depend on who the agent is and how well they are connected with Customs.

Might be a little different just shipping into Pattaya since you really dont need customs, However, Teak has special considerations as it is illegal to cut down Teak unless it is from a farm. Thats where certificates of Originality come in.

Most of the places are in Hangdong, however, you can find a few smaller peices in the Night Bazaar but a little more expensive.

Wifes mate and hubby (Thais) have a specialist company who deal with almost everything we needed to know re buying/selling /import/export etc and operate out of C.M.

I will be up there around the 2nd-3rd week in Oct (buying more land/wooden elephants etc)but could have a word if you like however I would rather ask them first...let me know. :o

I have a wee bit of knowledge about finding product from CM.

I personally stay away from Sankhampaeng, as IMHO the prices tend to be inflated, but I am sure that you can get some good deals if you try hard enough.

Depends on what type of furniture that you want..Teak,Hyacinth,Antique,Rattan or Bamboo etc. There are probably hundreds of companies here that export.

I believe the best way is to beat the feet and go around all the stores before you buy, because there can be a big difference in price.

Many of the "Taxi" drivers here will take a commission from the shop or factory.A good way to negate this is to look first and take a native Thai speaker that you can trust the next day.

If you can find out the factory where the furniture is made, the prices tend to be alot better. i have a perfetc example of this.a friend of mine was buy antique look alike statues for THB5000 each.My wife thought that this was a huge rip off , so she found out where they were made....the price dropped to THB1500!

I am busy over the next couple of days, but if anybody wants to PM me, I would be happy to give some more details etc.

Rocky,

I have a few reasonable contacts.either I buy off them or friends on mine do. The wifes away for a day, and I can't find the cards. :o Give me untill tomorrow and I will give you these names.

It does pay to keep shopping around though as what suits me might not be your cup of tea.

Is it teak or rattan/hyacinth or Antiques you are after.

cheers

Almost every furniture shop/factory will send it for you.

Failing that, companies like Nim See Seng have many trucks making the journey on a daily basis.

Has anyone here seen/know who makes the really nice teak wood outdoor setting on display in Index Living Mall, or something along the same lines? I'm talking of the one with the extendable oval table (25000B) and foldable chairs (6600B ea). Lovely pieces, but horribly overpriced - 50,000+B for an outdoor setting is just ridiculous!

I bought a sofa set from a place called Michaels. It is on the south side of Chiang Mai on the super highway near the airport.

They let me buy one chair at a time instead of buying the entire set at once. After buying the first smaller chair, they saw I was serious about my purchase and told me on the 2nd purchase(2nd small chair) to go ahead and take the sofa as well and pay next month.

They also gave a 5 year guarantee on the sofa.

They have very nice furniture in their store and good service.

I second that.

Last year I bought 2 teak wood outdoor settings (2 tables, 4 benches and 4 chairs) + 2 kitchen tables and 8 chairs ("regular" wood) for 8 000 bahts (including delivery). Unbeatable prices.

Does anyone have a good supplier of water hyacinth furniture in Chiang Mai? I believe there are masses of shops that sell the furniture but prices seem to be pretty high when ordered from people here in Phuket. Am thinking of going to CM myself and sourcing it there. Are there any shops/factories that have good quality stuff that you could recommend to cut down on trawling time?

If you are looking for good quality teak wood furniture, try the company called Golden Triangle HangDong, located just on the main road in the beginning of HangDong (from ChiangMai). They have some nice teakwood pieces, both antiques and new.

Really good thing is, that you can work with them through internet and email. Even custom made pieces! I have done it myself, it really worked :o . They even have a website store http://www.goldentriangle.co.th The web prices are not that cheap...but they go down if you request shipping within Thailand :D .

Golden Triangle must be the most exspenive furniture shop in thailand.

There are a lot more places in Hang Dong which are only half price or cheaper and the same quality

Actually, they have very same prices as other places in Hang Dong. But if you are shopping online, you have to request "thai price" :o

They have since gone bust... and the furniture I bought is falling to pieces. They use cheap wet wood ! I would steer clear of them but that's just my opinion. In fact I'm not even sure you'll get hold of them - I think they've fleed !

The best manufacturer IMO is Noi Heylo products

NOI HEYLO PRODUCTS Manufacturer, Retailer & Exporter Hyacinth products 266 Moo 2 T.Hangdong, A.Hangdong Chiang Mai. Tel. 053-434412-3

Best to speak to Noi direct,as the other staff tend to quote a little high.

Very, very solid frames etc and the Hyacinth has been well treated and dried.

I have exported quite alot from Noi in the past, and could not be more happy with the product.

Just reopening an old topic. I'm looking at the water hyacinth furniture and am trying to figure out what sort of prices I should be expecting to pay. I have no idea if they are trying to tell me farang prices or if they are being legit. I know it comes down to what you personally expect to and are happy to pay but I don't want to be paying exorbitant prices. I am looking at a 2 seater lounge and a little coffee table. What should I expect to pay?
