Army Chief Promises Partial Troop Withdrawal From Deep South

BANGKOK — The commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Army has pledged to begin withdrawing some troops from Thailand’s insurgency-plagued south in April 2015.

Gen. Udomdet Sitabutr said the partial withdrawal is a part of the military's new approach to battling Islamic insurgents in the three southern border provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat, and Yala, where 60,000 security officers are currently deployed. Many of the soldiers have been drafted from other regions of Thailand.

"[The new phase] will focus on building peace and sustainable development, so we will decrease the number troops in the region, and there will be a reshuffle," Gen. Udomdet said. "We want regional troops to be in charge of their own area. We will decrease troops from armies in other regions."

Under the new plan, the 4th Region Army will take a leading role in the region, said Gen. Udomdet. The troop reduction is set to begin in April, starting with areas that are ready for the withdrawal.

Yeah, General, brilliant idea, reverse the trend megalomaniac Thaksin had introduced, reduce the number of soldiers, drastically, BUT, at the same time, double, treble, the armed uniformed security forces in the Deep South, 'just' by re-assigning ALL the Police Officers on 'INACTIVE POST' there, to walk the streets, patrol, control, investigate, ...do Police job, that'd do the trick!

(Although, to be honest, Thaksin had done it only in a self-concerned strategy, to protect the lifes of the members of his PRETORIAN GUARD and give soldiers a big bone to chew on, away from his dirty, greedy, dominance games at the same time...)

BANGKOK: -- ARMY CHIEF General Udomdej Sitabutr has said all soldiers sent from other regions to provide security in the three southernmost provinces will be pulled out by April, leaving the task to the Fourth Army Region.

Speaking yesterday before flying to the region, he said the panel tasked with coming up with policies and strategies to solve the violence - chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan - had on Friday learned the satisfactory results of related operations and reported improvements in the situation.

That came despite a recent car-bomb attack in Narathiwat.

Prawit said the second phase of a 'road map' designed to bring about peace in the region, which applied proactive measures, was being implemented and the third phase of peace restoration and sustainable development would begin soon.

As a result, he said there would be fewer soldier deployments from other regions before the Fourth Army was left to do the job alone. He said the pullout had already started in areas deemed "ready" and rollbacks would be done after careful consideration based on an area's preparedness.

Udomdej was in the region yesterday to follow the progress of the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward Command's operations as well as the progress of road constructions using a para-rubber mixture. A quarter of 37 roads being built with rubber, for some Bt826 million, has been done.

Despite the military's growing confidence about the situation on the ground, violence continued yesterday morning with a roadside bomb in Yala's Raman district.

Insurgents targeted two trucks carrying 10 patrolling soldiers, who narrowly escaped injury.

It was done before and the police became sitting ducks which forced the army to take over again. What maybe closer to the truth is that the withdrawl is part of a behind the scenes agreement, we withdraw the troops and you don't plant bombs - we both look good. The only problem is the last time it was tried the terrorist used the time to rebuild their organisation and bring in more arms.

religion they are as a secondary matter. The so call insurgents, are really traitors to Thailand, as they

kill whoever they think is against them. It is time for these people to get out of Thailand and go somewhere

else, as they are not doing anybody living in that part of the country any favors.

The Muslim people of Thailand had better decide what they actually want in life. Do they want to be Thai people

who live in Thailand, or do they want to be outcasts who should live somewhere else.

There will come a time in Thailand where Muslim Thais will have to make this choice.

I have Muslim Thai relatives in Thailand and even they will not travel past Hat Yai , because they fear for

their lives, as much as my Buddhist relatives. That is a sad situation for everyone and it is

time the people in southern Thailand stand up for Thailand and not for these insurgents that are causing the trouble.
