Weather bureau forecast storms tomorrow

BANGKOK: -- The Meteorological Bureau of Thailand today warned of tropical storms in the northeast, lower central and eastern regions from tomorrow until Monday.

Its warning came after another cold spell from China is approaching to cover the said regions and the South China Sea during the period.

The arrival of the cold spell will strengthen the southeasterly wind which is covering the areas.

Torrential rains and thunder storms are expected from March 5-9, it said.

For Bangkok and surrounding provinces, the bureau forecasts cloudy sky with thunder rainstorm in 10% of areas today.

So far this year Khampaeng Phet has had 42.8 mm of rain compared with 3.8 mm in 2014 during the same period.

However November had 36.2 mm but December 2014 had only 1.9mm. A total of 83.7 mm in 4 months.

The farmers desperately need it but I hate the rain as it makes the grass grow and I have about 4 to keep down.

Having said that their need is far greater than mine plus if we get enough rain perhaps the government water supply will come back. It has been out for about 5 weeks now.

Great news for all the thirsty farms.

=====================

Not necessarily.

Rains would be good, but heavy driving rains on a very dry ground serface can cause erosion as hard dry ground can not adsorb a hard driving rain quickly and therefore the topsoil may be eroded off before the ground can become wet enough to properly adsorb the hard driving rain.

I like the way Thai weather bureau show isobars and temp dew point wind speed and perssure the way I was doing it in 1970 while I was weather man in the DND.

Will be good for North Thailand if it comes which I doubt so as people may be able to breathe clean air and put out any fires.

Yes I agree. When the rain comes in the fires go out and the air gets scrubbed , we are waiting for this up North .

The last rain we had here in Khon Kaen was three weeks ago,so I would be supperized if we do get any. This is not quite the rainy season,so if it were to rain I would conceder it a blessing.

It is now over 6 hrs since Thai PBS posted this report, apparently based on information information supplied by the Thai Meteorological Bureau yet their website still gives no indication of the predicted weather change so I sent Thai PBS this message:

"Just over 6hrs ago you posted the report of a major imminent weather change, apparently based on information supplied by the Thai Meteorological Bureau. The Bureau's website still provides no indication of this weather change. How can you explain this?"

In English of course.

On the Met's website, the 7 day forecast at the bottom of the page, keeps coming up in Thai for me, even though I'm on the English site.

Clicked on their Facebook link and saw the upcoming weather announcement and the 7 day forecast link from there, came up in English. Reading both, I still didn't see where it said "torrential rain" like the Thai PBS article quoted though.

Tropical storm to make landfall in Thailand

BANGKOK, 5 March 2015 (NNT)-The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has issued warnings for people in 40 provinces against a tropical storm which is likely to take place during March 5-10.

According to the DDPM, the high pressure system from China is now moving to cover the northeastern, central and eastern regions of Thailand. As a result, thunder storms with gusty wind are expected to occur during the day.

The impact will be seen in most part of the Northeast and the east coast while only a handful of provinces in the lower portion of the Central Plains will experience adverse weather conditions. Residents have been told to be cautious when leaving their homes.

Provinces likely to be affected include Pathumthani, Nonthaburi, Ayutthaya, Saraburi, Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Chachoensao, Sakaeo, Nakhon Ratchasrima, Chaiyaphum, Buriram, Surin, Khon Kaen, Kalasin, Roi-et, Maha Sarakham, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Buengkan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Loei, Kamphang Phet, Pichit, Uthai Thani, Nakhon Sawan, Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Chainat, Lopburi, Ang Thong, Singburi, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat.

Someone should tell the Thai Meteorological Department. No indication whatsoever on their website of a "storm" making landfall. "Partly cloudy and Isolated thundershowers" down south just means typical tropical weather. A storm in a teacup maybe ;-)

Still sunny in BKK.

Tropical storms = more than 1 tropical storm !

Tropical storms have names. What are the names of the ones coming over?

A tropical storm is a storm coming from a tropical depression with a closed circulation system with maximum windspeeds from 34 to 63 knots.

Those "well studied" Thai probably mean thunderstorms....

False alert again! The Thai weather information bureau should just report: Climatic changes expected within a pacific period of time which

has not been determined at this time, or in the near future. Stay tuned for future developments.

It's strange there is no mention of it here. on the Thai Meteorological Department's website.

UPDATE: today... (That's tomorrow in the OP)

38C in the shade and dry with a clear blue sky. There is not a cloud in sight in the OP's mentioned areas.

Thai TMD is about as effective as the RTP. Cronies at all levels and no concept of anyone doing their job. Now I have lived in several tropical/hurricane/typhoon regions over the years and have never seen a "tropical storm" come from the north (in the northern hemisphere).

At best is it face saving after their last debacle when they did not predict the few violent thunderstorm a few weeks ago the wreaked havoc in a couple of isolated areas. Like most posters here I don't see anything different on the TMD weather forecast for my province.

I check the TMD site daily but also check weather underground, MSN and the weather channel anytime conditions may change. Out of the four sites TMD blows the worst. On all the other three sites I get sliding scales and better predictions, out of TMD about the only time they get it right is the start and stop of rain season, ( 10% increase in the chance of rain every week starting May 1st and a 10% reduction in the chance of rain each week beginning 1 October). TMD is a bunch of child geniuses from families of the enlightened at best.

Sort of like the US massive snow storm that shut down New York City and it's transit system and sent workers scurrying for home at the end of January ... and then never came.

Weather forecasters issued a flurry of apologies for their spectacularly off-the-mark predictions of 20 to 30 inches of snow, which left the city in a virtual shutdown despite the blizzard barely glancing the Big Apple.

National Weather Service meteorologist Gary Szatkowski tweeted a series of mea culpas Tuesday about his “big forecast miss.”

My deepest apologies to many key decision makers and so many members of the general public.

Per Bassman: "TMD is a bunch of child geniuses from families of the enlightened at best".

I spent 2 1/2 years in Thailand from 2010 to 2013. Visited TMD once a week pretty much every week. Had and still have many friends there even though I'm back in the states. My best friend there is from Roi Et. Many of the mets there are not from Bangkok. Many are from the north and northeast, but they are from all over Thailand. Went to university and studied and worked hard and still work hard. (Other than the office workers they work 24 hour shifts.) And I'd say that 100% of the ones I knew were not child geniuses from families of the enlightened few. Not to say that a few may have come from better off families, but the lump sum statement is annoying.

Now to the "tropical storm" part of this story. It didn't do me any good trying to tell them that these are not tropical storms in the true sense of the meaning. Sometimes there are failures to communicate meanings between English and Thai. Yes, there will thunderstorms in the tropics, but that doesn't make them "tropical storms". Anyway enjoy your tropical storms in a few days.
