MJP Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Good source of information about pesticides . . . http://www.pesticideinfo.org/
marko kok prong Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 They still use paraqaut here, and organochlorine for weed/pest control, banned in Europe Australia, since 1980's.
apetley Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 If you're concerned about pesticides, buy organic. Great Harvest is a widely available organic hom mali rice with great aroma and taste. To be honest, I look forward to opening every bag and taking a big sniff. Weird, I know. Anyway, highly recommended (by me, at least). My wife went to a health seminar a while ago and got talking with a supposed organic farmer who very matter of factly told her how it was possible to cheat the checks by being forewarned and bribing officials. Personally the only organic food I trust is the stuff I grow in my own back garden.
mogandave Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Yet people generally keep living longer and longer. Indeed. But this has much to do with public health systems, soap and antibiotics as well as general practice and specialist medicine. Cancer rates are on the rise globally. Although how this correlates with the increase in life expectancy and the oldie age group, not sure. . Everyone dies of something, and the older people get, the more likely they are to die of cancer. So in one post guys are going on about how inept all the doctors are, and in another, they are held up as the reason we are living longer. 1
cooked Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 I remember a big scare in Switzerland in the 80's concerning Nitrite (not Nitrate) contents in vegetables grown there. Somebody decided that high rates of Nitrites were unhealthy and people started to buy 'organic' vegetables. Organic vegetables were later often found to contain unacceptable levels of residues. Anyway, the population in the 'vegetable garden of Switzerland' were among the healthiest in the country (visits to doctors and dentists, life expectancy, infant mortality) despite the fact that they were, obviously, big consumers of these satanic food stuffs. I was aggressively shouted down when I tried to bring this fact to the attention of a public meeting. Eat veg... you'll live longer. The Swiss government very quietly removed limits on Nitrite contents a few years ago, I didn't hear a word from the elitist all knowing conspiracy theorists. On to the next battle against Glyphosat I suppose.
CharlieH Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 A post possibly in the wrong topic and a response to it have been removed.

But do you want to be unnecessarily ingesting pesticides that either initiate or promote cancer?

MJP Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Yes. Seriously. I did the remediation of one of Europe's biggest pesticide production sites. They made Agent Orange and DDT there et.al. The only soil treatment that worked was thermal desorption at 550 degrees centigrade. Active ingredients and solvent carriers can be particularly toxic if not stored and used correctly. The solvent carriers in particular represent a high carcinogenic risk either as initiators or promoters.

That said, I worry a lot more about cirrhosis than I do cancer. 1
h90 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Yet people generally keep living longer and longer. My father didn't get enough food as child (and not enough protein and vitamins). My mothers family was well off so she sometimes got a slice of ham on the bread and grandpa insist to have some ducks or chicken even the place isn't suitable as he thought the kids should get more protein. (Middle of Europe after we lost the war) Some more food with pesticides would have let their parents surely live longer..... Modern medicine also let people live longer.
thehelmsman Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Those Farang living in Isaan with rice fields have probably had the discussion of cost and benefits of growing their own rice. At best it's a break even deal giving the family sticky and steam rice. They are very aware of rice bought in store comes from unknown origin. We make fresh rice daily regardless of left overs. Latey we have been having the freshly cut rice fields tilled under. It makes for a better rice yield without using fertilizer. Also growing other crops during the winter months gives the soil a boost. 1
