Going to Portuguese embassy Monday to apply fir s schengen visa for my wife who is Thai. I am an Irish citizen.

Looking through the list of documents it says:

- Bank guarantee + Bank book and other documents attesting sufficient economic means to travel and stay in schengen territory.

Bank guarantee ??? What is thus ? We have her bank book updated and copies of it.

We got a Portuguese Schengen a few years ago for Mrs E to go on our sister in laws hen week, at that point she'd already had 2 Schengen visas for Spain and several visas for the UK and it was the hardest one to get, I ended up walking out of The Embassy as the Portuguese chap we were talking to was a complete tosser and seemed to keep changing the goal posts during the conversation, in the end the Mrs went back on her own with more paperwork than we had done for her first UK visa, she got it in the end and had a great hen week but we certainly won't ever be visiting Portugal ever again, just get as much paperwork as you can covering everything!

Good luck

You are Irish and thus an EU national. You are married and thus your wife is a non-EU family member. You are traveling to an other EU country together.

Therefor she is eligable for a free visa, issued without delay and minimal paperwork. You only need to show evidence of the above and financial solvability, flightticjets, hotelbooking, insurance etc. are not required.

See the Schengen sticky for details or even one of the many topics of EU nationals traveling to France, Spain, Netherlands, ... . The portugese instructions are either wrong or you have missed the bit about EU/EEA familymember applications.

If you have any questions after consulting the stickied thread, please do ask. :)
