British Husband, Thai Wife, No Name Change: What's Their Baby's Name?

Recommended Posts

Current Scenario:

British man marries Thai woman. They both live permanently - legally - in Thailand. British man keeps his surname. Thai woman keeps her surname. As of yet, no plans to change this. Thai woman is pregnant, will have a baby in Thailand. Family will occassionally travel outside Thailand as tourists.

Hypothetical Question:

What is the newborn baby's surname?

Him: First Name, Farang Last Name

Her: First Name, Thai Last Name

Baby: First Name, Farang Last-Thai Last?

Confusing! Any advice?

thank you!

We fit exactly the hypothesy (well we did before our son was born)

Our son has my surname since that what we had planned, however I do not remember there being any issue with us using either of our surnames.

What rw says,

Not sure the colour of the British father's skin is relevant to the question.

White, black, yellow or brown, not important to surname.

Can be the father's surname, or the mom surname, I done the same case for my 2 kids to hold my surname,

Depends on the parents decision,

Colour of skin is not in question. At all.

The British Embassy (citizen services office) is your best source of information, in that regard. Periodcoffee1.gif They will probably advise you to obtain genetic DNA testing (or 100% clarity), prior to making a decision.

When my wife and me got married the question was asked if she wanted my surname or to keep hers.

We decided she would use my last name (bad decision, but that is another story).

When our daughter and then our son were born the same question was asked.

"What last name do you want?"

It is seriously up to you.

When we married in 2000 in the UK my wife kept her family name and there have been no problems.

Our son was born in Thailand during 2004 and he has a Thai first name and my family surname.

He also has an English nickname.

If he wants to change his family name later in his life that will be up to him.
