March 19, 201511 yr <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script> Can anyone experienced Garmin user explain this, please? When I go to my girlfriend's sister's house (from Pattaya to Ban Chang) it (correctly) takes us "cross-country" but on the way back it wants to keep us on route 3. Why the different routes for the same journey albeit in reverese? AlanYou're settings may indicate "faster route" which will sometimes cause this to happen. Try different settings like "shortest route" to see if that suits your driving style. I've just checked the settings and they are indeed set to the fastest route. However, I would not have thought that there would be much difference in time between going and coming back. Also, when I turn right at a set of traffic lights rather than going straight ahead, the expected arrival time changes to a minute or two earlier. Alan
March 19, 201511 yr My first garmin purchase was my last, toy like product, professional like price. Just a few of many issues. Stuck in Bkk trying to get out before the traffic, took over 10 minutes to locate the satellites, (that with it out in the open) Using the virb camera, quite frequently it just doesnt record, and often locks up requiring battery removal to get it to 'work'. Not recommended
March 20, 201511 yr The best GPS in Thailand may be Garmin,. I just wish it had the facilities O had on my TomTom one 11 years ago. It still does not have waypoints without forcing you to stop for at least 5 minutes. So you cannot use the waypoints to guide you along better routes and still know your arrival time. The update for new junctions can take a full year before they appear. In the past it has routed me over bridges which only a motorcycle can use. Quite often I take a route that I know is better. When it recalculates it tells me my route is 10 Km shorter. I just wish that TomTom would come to Thailand. Until then, I could not live without my Garmin. as I said before....buy KAMAZ with waypoints, find-home button and all what you need
March 24, 201511 yr Has anyone tried HERE maps on a smartphone? They are free and cover most the world. I think they are the same ones that are used on Nokia phones but are now available for Android as well. I have them installed on my phone but not used them yet.

The new Thailand maps are far better than the old ones I had on my old GPS. It took me a while to figure out Garmins Basecamp software and it is a pita to have to plug the GPS into my PC but other than that I like it.
March 24, 201511 yr I have Garmin Thailand on my iPhone, which includes free map updates four times a year. I have found map detail, accuracy and POIs to be excellent. I have the same on Note 2 (Android) which can't directly installed, but once you get it running it is great......
May 11, 201511 yr Where are you guys buying these Garmins, how miuch and do they come with Garmin Pre loaded maps?
May 12, 201511 yr Where are you guys buying these Garmins, how miuch and do they come with Garmin Pre loaded maps? In Pattaya they are normally available in all the SED bookshops - so that's every mall basically and are regularly promoted. Used to also be in Lotus and Big C but not sure if still stocked. All come with the maps pre loaded. Base model was 3,990 but I think they start from about 5k now - just had a quick look here and they have one at 2,990 -http://www.gpssociety.com/TH/Pages/product.aspx
May 27, 201511 yr I have an old Garmin, no cards for it anymore, but mine is very good for rural roads and I have never been lost with it ; it even knows the laterite roads, country roads of Thailand ( Esri maps ) I have downloaded a nice young female voice, who speaks in my language, very nice to listen ! ( real voice, not a machine )
June 9, 201511 yr to Moose717. On the Garmin there is a setting to Avoid Toll Roads that might have been checked wrong. If the chosen mode, auto -walk -bike is wrong you cannot use a toll way. I had mine tell me to get off at every highway exit until I found it was set to walking. I was real angry at that thing. Edited June 9, 201511 yr by gary94578

You have to stop their at least 5 minutes. It defaults to 30 minutes. A waypoint is somewhere you go via. Quite often you input it to force Garmin to go a better route than it wants. So if you have a planned route it will not tell you your arrival time. It will add all your stopping times. These are not waypoints
July 17, 201510 yr The Gps you can't delete onApple phones will accept Google Maps free from Apps , and it's far more detailed.
July 18, 201510 yr Google GPS maps are Tom Tom ,just updated it. I thought that for some years already, Google has been using its own maps. Prior to that, a footnote at the bottom right of the screen made reference to TeleAtlas. Still earlier, it appears to have been NavTec. http://searchengineland.com/no-more-teleatlas-google-goes-it-alone-for-maps-data-27584 The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place
July 19, 201510 yr Just looked again it says GPS updated by Tom Tom,this is the Apple Iphone 6+ version that wont delete. The D Loaded Google maps doesn't say anything about updates. Rather funny that.
July 19, 201510 yr I really wish a proper company would enter the gps market, like sony. garbagemin are a total disgrace, just check the forums and see how every product has a litany of bugs, issues and faults imo DO NOT buy garmin
July 19, 201510 yr Im in the US for a short time driving across the states. As such I chose to purchase a GPS. Went online and read reviews. I ended up with: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-road/automotive/2015-line/nuvicam-lmthd/prod168820.html Couldn't be happier with the choice. Camera, large screen, bluetooth which allows pairing of phone and other devices, collision alarms, free map upgrades for life, voice commands that work great, and to many other features to list. To the naysayers of Garmin, you have no clue how to use a GPS or technology.
July 24, 201510 yr google maps is the best cuz it shws live traffic Garmin GPS can show live traffic as well, including in Bangkok.

Perhaps you could elaborate? I am on my third Garmin over the past ten years, and I am quite satisfied with map accuracy, platform stability, and just about everything else I would expect of it. So is Garmin bashing and hating becoming en vogue, much like the Apple bashing and hating?

But I'd be happier if the same model selection were available as in the USA, and for the same prices, and with maps as accurate. That said, I don't drive a new road in Thailand without my cheapo Garmin Nuvi 40.

Maps are getting better in Thailand but of course, not nearly as good as in other countries. There is a reason why Garmin GPS units are the industry leader....and its not because of the few people who dont like them. GPS units are plug and play but, to get the most you must learn about it and set it up properly. A task most people fail to do and then blame it on a GPS company maker.

August 20, 201510 yr I have an old Garnin Nuvi 255 bought from the US, uploaded the free Thai map I found online. There seems to be trouble with connecting to the satellite, it would take like 30minutes and run extremely slow. Once connected, it would lose reception almost immediately when I move. Anybody know what could be the problem? Is it that something in the free map is no good causing this problem? I don't use it much, but would like to get it working without spending couple thousand. Will Garmin Thailand take a look at the problem without charging a fee?
September 3, 201510 yr I have had little joy using my Garmin. A lot has to do with the different spellings Garmin use compared to local usage. For example Sri Don Chai Rd is Si Don Chai on Garmin. It doen't help that sometimes the road signs use different spellings like Jomtien and Chomtien.
