the Garmin Thailand experience.

Sorry but Garmin stinks, I only use it because the others stink more. Examples on the expressway to Minburi there is specific turn off that Garmin tells you to turn when you have already passed the turn off (everytime the same thing - but we know now), which means a 22 km detour. It gets confused when you drive on layered roads like on the road to Mega Banga. On the route north from HH it wants you to go through BKK instead of using highway 4 and Nakhon Sawan, which means that when you take highway 4 the irritating women inside Garmin tells you to make a u-turn for about an hour. It is too slow on commands for BKK traffic, by the time it gives the command you can't turn anymore. The prenounciation of the Thai names are so bad that my wife can't understand what the Garmin is saying.

Why can't the Garmin have a learning mode which will enable you to travel your prefered route instead of the Garmins route. GPS's (devices) lack off developments will make them outdated within 10 years.

Pretty much all Garmins can follow a predefined route of your choice.

Its tested, proven and known that your smartphone has a better gps and are faster and more accurate than any gps. For Android just buy Sygic world map for around 40 euro. Have maps for most parts in world and offline. Free lifetime updates. If you have a Nokia windows phone then you have same but free maps covering same countries as Sygic so i guess Nokia uses tom tom maps too. If you have any smartphone and free internet then by all means use google maps.

Can you provide any links to those tests?

I wouldn't even attempt to drive out of my downtown Bangkok neighborhood on a new route without my Garmin in the car. I use my phone and Navigator or Maps for walking, but the Garmin for driving.

I can't read Thai, and the traffic signs are often incomprehensible. Then there's flyovers, and u-turns and one way streets to make navigation even more challenging. 95% of the time, the Garmin is right on. 5% of the time, it gets me there, but not the way I'd have gone on my own.

I do agree that a learning mode would be nice, or the ability to follow a previously recorded route instead of relying on the built in logic. My main complaint is that it's too likely to send me down BKK side streets when an expressway would be a lot handier and faster...even if it is a few km longer.

The best GPS in Thailand may be Garmin,. I just wish it had the facilities O had on my TomTom one 11 years ago. It still does not have waypoints without forcing you to stop for at least 5 minutes. So you cannot use the waypoints to guide you along better routes and still know your arrival time. The update for new junctions can take a full year before they appear. In the past it has routed me over bridges which only a motorcycle can use.

Quite often I take a route that I know is better. When it recalculates it tells me my route is 10 Km shorter.

I just wish that TomTom would come to Thailand. Until then, I could not live without my Garmin.

Pretty much all Garmins can use waypoints. TomTom has had maps for Thailand for years.

The difference is that at a Garmin way point it will automatically give you a 30 minute stopover. The minimum you can change it to is 5 minutes. So now, unless you stop at the way point your arrival time will be wrong. This is not a way point, but a via

My Garmin (Zumo) does not work like that. What model do you use?

Does anybody know where you can buy a Tom Tom in Bangkok?

I'm using a run of the mill Garmin. Not a high end Zumo

Zumo is a range of motorcycle units which includes cheaper ones too.

I use a NUVI 2467. I do not think the problem exists, except in Thailand. ESRI said they would fix it on the next release. But they did not

In the device using route planning app

Lets try the old fashion way. Connect your Garmin to your computer via USB. Download this route and place it in your Garmin's garmin/gpx folder. Disconnect your Garmin from the Computer and turn it on. Some Garmins will ask if you want to import others you have to go via the menus.

Thanks for all your help. I plugged my Garmin into the computer and it said there was a software update. The update fixed the problem. It also changed some of the settings and made my planned routes blank. But, it now works as it should. So I am happy. It is only a couple of months since I did the last software upgrade

I take that back, I have just started it again and it is back as it was. If I try to save the stay time as 0 it will not save it. I have to set the stay time to at least 5 mins. It will default to 30 mins

NightRider70, I did as you suggested and your trip has 0 waiting times. As I said, it will not allow me to save 0 time on new routes I create

MJCM I do not have an arrival time or Duration to set

MJCM. Mine does not have sheduled routes option. They are all unsheduled routes. So I cannot give a planned arrival time.

I have a Garmin 2467LM too. Bought through ESRI this year and I don't have that problem.

Thanks for that info

It looks as if I need to pay a visit to ESRI again. They could not help the last time I took the problem to them.

Is the simple route I posted working properly? If so, it looks like the problem is with the route planing app and not with the core software. I do not have the same sort of app in my older Zumo so I am afraid I can not help you with that app.

As a work around you could use the simple software I use to create routes, including the one I posted. It is a free software called routeconverter. I have used it for years as I find it easier to use than BaseCamp. It is written in Java so it can run on Windows, Mac, Unix and anything else that can run Java. I think it is a little gem. You can also use it to create and edit POIs and tracklogs. The last Windows version (2.16) seems unstable tho. If you want to use it and experience hangings, like I did with 2.16, let me know and I can post a link to the Windows 2.15 version.

I rather work with .gpx files because then you can store your routes and POIs on your computer easy and independent of any software that can crash. You can also email a route to a friend easy. If you create a route and save it in .gpx format in your Garmin's 'garmin/gpx' folder you can import it again if your GPS needs a reset out in the sticks. The .gpx format is universial so it can be used on TomToms too for example.

Thanks NightRider70. The route you sent me was visible and usable but did not have any names for the places. Not a problem. I have loaded the program and I'm currently trying. Thanks for your help.

You can set names for the via points in that program, I didn't for that example tho. You can also have multiple routes within the same .gpx file.

Thanks NightRider 70. I got the program you suggested working and created some routes. It worked fine.

I just got back from a long trip with my Garmin zumo 220 .. I bought it second hand to give me an idea what I wanted from a satnav before I splashed out bigger bucks.

Are all the Garmin satnav's this stupid ? or the more money I spend I can expect a more intelligent one ?

I have it loaded with nightriders maps, which were excellent in Laos .. but getting around Bangkok was a nightmare.

I have 2 settings, fastest and quickest ( + off road ), I can see what it did today, the Zumo said I should divert from a main trunk road and ride down a pot hole filled costal road because it was probably 50 meters shorter. When I try fastest, it often tries to take me different way that I know is not faster ..

In Thailand I prefer to run google maps on my iPhone, I bought the Zumo cheaply for trips outside the country, but before I buy something newer and more expensive - am I going to get the same service as my 220, which is bordering on useless.

Its all about the features the specific unit has how you set it up. Its a budget unit so you really shouldnt expect the best features Here is a review did you do one before you purchased it? You do know its a motorcycle unit right? http://bestmotorcyclegpsguide.net/garmin-zumo-220-review/

Yes, I think I read that .. and yes, its mounted on my bike, and thats what I was looking for, a bike GPS.

You will see the negative comments, such as the keyboard, which is slightly annoying, and the features. Huh ? The only feature I wanted was to get me to where I want to be, and also what would be nice, like google maps is to say "no, not that route - route b would be better".

To be honest, I paid 7,000B for the thing, as an experiment to see what I wanted from a GPS. Its fine for the moment, it worked well in Laos or Malaysia where I don't have cell coverage. It's just not so great in Thailand where there are more routes to choose. I find the fuel feature great, when riding in Laos. I can't knock this little GPS unit for the money i paid.

I was just wondering, if / when I upgrade do I get a little more intelligence ?

Haha, who knows except the more money you pay more features but, what that equates to in intelligence is above my head. Good luck with it let us know what you end up with.

A warning to auto travellers around Bangkok. At the Intersection of the West Bound Outer Ring Road and Rama II there is a ticket trap that is very expensive. I use Garmin gps system which directs you to move left to get on the entry to Rama II (Hwy 35). There is indeed an exit there to enter onto the circular road going South on Hwy 35, but it is blocked off by the Police. Your are then funnelled into the toll booth closest to you which is manned full time by the police who then issue you a 2000 baht ticket. You can avoid this when traveling west on the Outer Ring by NOT listening to your Garmin device and moving over earlier about 1 km or so left to the sign marked Samut Sakhon.

There is an upgrade for Google maps in Apple Store, not bad either

A lot of Garmin complainers are using the US Garmin supplied Asia maps which absolutely stink. The Thailand Garmin ERSI map is excellent. I have a 2015 Isuzu with the in dash GPS. The Garmin is head and shoulders over this Isuzu supplied map. I long ago gave up on using address searches. That address search simply works poorly on all the GPS maps that I have tried, and I have tried a lot of them. If at all possible, I try to get GPS coordinates for where I want to go. Google Maps help a lot. If coordinates are not available, most hotels are listed and one should be close to where you want to go. And, YES, I have ruined my travel directions by totally relying on the GPS.

Tomtom go app works fine android

Sent from my SM-A800F using Tapatalk

I had an 855 Garmin that I bought in the US. The ESRI maps work but some features don't work. Lane assist and the junction view won't work. I also bought a cheap Garmin from Eagle GPS and it has lifetime free updates and everything works fine. In fact just yesterday I updated the software and map. That was the second time. The first time was somewhat confusing but this time it was all automatic.
