Singapore to play Thailand Selection ahead of China showdown

The Singapore national team, in preparation for their crucial showdown against China in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers on Wednesday, 6 September 2006, will play a Thailand Selection side in a friendly.

The friendly match is scheduled for Saturday, 2 September at Choa Chu Kang Stadium. Kickoff is at 7.30pm.

The Singapore-Thailand Selection clash will serve as a good workout for the Lions before next Wednesday’s China clash with coach Radojko Avramovic expected to give the majority of his squad a run-out.

Ashrin strike clinches laboured victory

Singapore 1-0 Thailand

A late goal from Ashrin Shariff ensured that Singapore fans went home happy after they watched the team complete a 1-0 win over a Thailand selection team on Saturday evening.

The SAFFC striker struck on his club’s home turf at Choa Chu Kang in the 82nd minute, ramming home a corner by winger Ahmad Latiff after the Thais had failed to clear.

Ashrin’s goal swung a tie in which the Lions, looking for a workout ahead of their Asian Cup qualifier against China, were made to labour harder than they had planned.

And while the result may have been positive, the performance on the pitch may leave national coach Radojko Avramovic with more concerns than answers as he prepares his team for the vital mission to come on Wednesday.
