NRC's whips to consider the practice of hiring relatives to be assistants of NRC members

BANGKOK: -- The National Reform Council’s whips will consider a report that some of the council members have hired their family members or relatives to be their assistants.

Responding to a reporter’s question about a report that at least 12 members of the NRC hired their relatives or family members as their assistants, NRC president Thienchay Kiranant said that he had reminded the council’s members about the issue after the exposure in the media about members of the National Legislative Assembly hiring their family members or relatives as their aides.

However, he said he would raise the issue at the meeting of the NRC’s whips today.

Meanwhile, Mr Alongkorn Polabutr, a member of the whips, said that the report had tainted the reputation of the NRC. But he added that it would depend on each individual’s conscience whether to stop the practice.

Alongkorn noted that the report in question was not entirely accurate as some some council members hired their relatives to be their assistants but did not claim any payments from the state.

Mr Wanchai Sornsiri admitted he hired his own daughter as his personal specialist at 20,000 baht a month. He insisted that her daughter actually worked for him but would be willing to stop hiring her once the whips had come up with an answer to the problem.

A practice that has been going on in Thailand for quite a while and all previous governments had never addressed the issue. In fact ignored it only for it to grow like a fungus in a petri dish. With the pinnacle of abuse being witnessed by the PTP.

It is good to see the NRC is pro actively addressing this cause for concern and lets hope a change is reflected in the reform process so this practice ceases in the future.

I'm more than happy to hear you are happy also with the actions this government is taking.

New era, eh Djjamie?

Just wait.....we are going to hear of more good things coming on our way.

Don't hold your breath..........just said......wait and see................

They are reacting only because, they were caught with their pants down!!coffee1.gif

"They are reacting"

They certainly are and good for them.

Stop hiring relatives, NRC members told
THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- THE NATIONAL Reform Council has instructed its members to terminate the employment of their relatives after it was revealed that 12 NRC members had hired family members to work for them, Wanchai Sornsiri, spokesman of the NRC whip, said yesterday.

The move follows a public outcry over allegations of nepotism and cronyism hitting the National Legislative Assembly after it was found that more than 50 NLA members had hired their spouses, children or other kin to help them with official duties.

The Secretariat of the House of Representatives revealed that Kittiphon Thungklang hired Passorn Thungklang for Bt15,000 a month; Kusaimahwansafinah Manoonthawee hired Abeedee Manoonthawee for Bt15,000 a month; Charus Suthigoolabutr hired Narongchai Suthigoolabutr for Bt20,000; Jarernsak Salakij hired Pisut Salakij for Bt20,000; Tiwar Kankrasang hired Sakon Kankrasang for Bt15,000; Teerasak Panichwit hired Natchanont Panichwit for Bt15,000; Manas Roobkajorn hired Watcharadej Roobkajorn Bt15,000; Wanchai Sornsiri hired Chattip Sornsiri for Bt20,000; Sayumporn Limthai hired It Limthai for Bt15,000; Suvat Singhapant hired Thanyanut Singhapant for Bt15,000; Uthai Sonluksub hired Panida Sonluksub for Bt15,000 and Ubol Limsakul hired Panomda Limsakul Bt15,000.

Alongkorn Ponlaboot, NRC whip secretary, said the council was ready to disclose information as NRC members are public figures and they have a responsibility to help bring about reform because society has put its hope and faith in them.

He admitted that the revelations adversely affected the NRC's image. He said there were some NRC members who had hired family members as their aides who are not accepting any salaries and benefits.

NRC member Wanchai admitted that he had hired his daughter but insisted that she was qualified. He said he would follow the NRC's whip decision to terminate her employment NRC member Suwat Singhapant said he had Major Thanyanut Singhapan work for him and he had written to the Secretariat of the House of Representatives seeking permission.

Finally, maybe, but the damage is done and it will be difficult if not impossible to overcome the perception of how the NLA works to their own benefit, no surprise there.

How binding will this instruction be as the PM made it clear he saw nothing wrong ?

The only ones they know about share the same name.

No one is interested in having each answer the question: "Do any of any your relatives work here?"

Just another half step in the right direction for the government of one step scourges, one step actions, and one step approaches to ten mile journeys.

One question. If the people who are hired as aides are ACTUALLY doing the job of aide.. What's the problem.. the wages are in keeping with the job title, it's fairly common practice in business to have your most trusted person as aide. As long as the people are DOING the job that they are paid for honestly.. What's the problem?

There is one case where an admiral is employing his wife and daughter in 4 roles. As long as 2 people are doing the 4 jobs they are paid for...What's the problem?

The junta lovers have an amazing ability to rationalize all wrongdoings. And when they can't, just throw out the tried and true "but, but, but the last government did it..."

If you are proactive, you make things happen, instead of waiting for them to happen to you. So please jamie enlighten me on how an individual's conscience as to whether or not to stop the practice of hiring relatives after being exposed constitutes pro actively addressing.

That's the NLA this item is the NRC.. Keep up!

And my comments were exactly as stated. If the people are doing the job correctly. What's the problem?

If the family members are working part time in a full time role that's not working correctly. But other wise.

So the question is, if all the family members are working correctly in their full time positions for the wage stated (which seems average for an office worker) then what's the problem?

IF the family members are QUALIFIED and IF they are the BEST person for the job then I see no problem, Now are they infact the best qualified for the job or are there better candidates out there? It could have been handled a lot better.

There are perks that come with the job even if they are not drawing a salary, ie, government pensions, health care, cheap loans, and the all to familiar friends in powerful places can get results in issues that may require a little string pulling.

Exactly, relatives should be forced to go through the process of setting up companies that win the tenders and get their cut, just like the rest of the bureaucracy.

You seem to not be able to grasp the ethical issue here, but, quite understandable, since you also seem to fail to see the ethical issue with forcefully deposing elected governments.

(What are the odds the response will be "but, but, but the last government...)

If they are the best person for the 'specialist' job why are they not on the NLA/NRC rather than their Dad or relative.........

Your correct. As long as the people in the jobs have the experience and qualifications to do the job, I do not see a problem. The salaries paid are in keeping with a job of this kind!

If on the other hand they DON'T have the experience and qualifications then it's wrong.. we are talking about aides NOT nuclear scientists so I'm presuming any one with a high school education would fit the bill.

Of course they could, and probably will have to employ staff outside of their families. So advertising, time for interviews, security checks etc. That should add a few months to their schedule.. but that's no problem, right?
