maybe its a combined bakery and pet store selling puppies ?

Good name for a hot dog stand; 'The Barkery'.

Maybe more than a hot dog stand.

What amazes me is why the owner accepted the sign. We had a few issues with some promotional materials that were littered with spelling mistakes and the then Head of the Marketing dept was happy to let it ride, her excuse being our ( Thai ) customers would not notice. Wasn't head for very long and it never happened again.

What I don't understand is with the huge preoccupation of Thais for "Losing Face" why they allow bad spelling on their signs which is so common. The idea NEVER seems to cross their brains to get an English speaker to check English spelling for their sometimes expensive signs.

I guess "Losing Face" is of no concern to them with regard to a falang, only to other Thais.

You see it a lot, there are signs on the escalators in big C extra that are incorrect. Some years ago there were condo promo signs posted all over the place and the english was incomprehensible. You would think that in the proof reading stage they would get a proficient english reader to check...but Thais know much more than foreigners so no need.

I bought a small thin paper back book with English stories to help with my sons English reading, i was at the railway station and my train was arriving so i had no time to look at the book before paying. It was awful, it was an educational book, the syntax and spelling was all over the place, i threw it away it was that bad

My missus has several books on the English language ( supposedly written by native English speakers) and i have spent many hours correcting them. One example - "Single' (Noun) 1. only one in number; one only; unique; sole:. Now, maybe times have changed (although, I don't think so) but, when i went to school, the word "Single" was an Adjective whistling.gif

I saw a sign that said "Our security is not polite"

It took me a while to figure out that they meant to say "Our security is not the police".

Also a noun. Check your dictionary. He hit a single. (baseball) I want to rent a single. (Room for one person.) I gave him a single (dollar) and received some change. Etc, etc.

Maybe they thought it would be a good way of getting noticed...talked about....free advertising....maybe even a mention with pics on a Farang forum.....

The Thai mind isn't that complicated, although the explanation would be a good face saver.

Although we've covered this topic before, and I suggested (only half jokingly) that someone could have a proof reading service for 20baht her sign before they make it for real, I think there would be a good public service that TV members could offer where any business in Thailand could submit their design to a sub forum on here for proof reading, and they'd have edit and turn around in minutes. To avoid them losing face it could be packaged as a 'free advertising to farang' forum or something.

Chiang Mai had years ago a "Crookery School". I wanted to get Con Man 101 and Advanced Scamming, but when I found the time [and my camera] the sign was gone...
