Thaksin may greet Prayut with smile if they meet in Singapore

BANGKOK: -- Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will at least greet Prime Minister General Prayut Chanocha with a smile if their paths should cross in Singapore on Sunday at the state funeral of Lee Kuan Yew, a former Pheu Thai MP said Wednesday.

Surapong Tohvichakchaikul said Thaksin intends to go to Singapore to pay his respects to Lee Kuan Yew's family. He may not attend the official function but he will attend the portion of the funeral that is open to the public.

"It is unlikely that he will not meet General Prayut, who will also attend the event on Sunday. However, if they meet, Thaksin is expected to at least greet him with a smile," he said.

Surapong was speaking Wednesday at the Singapore Embassy in Bangkok after signing the book of condolences for Lee. He was joined by former premiers Yingluck Shinawatra and Somchai Wongsawat.

C'mon Surapong tell the truth for once in your life.

Thaksin will not attend the official ceremony because he was not invited as he is a criminal on the run.

The only one that still cares about him are his lapdogs the so called red leaders.

The official ceremony invite list is restricted to family, Singapore government officials, close friends of the deceased and selected foreign country representatives. The protocol is the same in most countries when there are state funerals. If everyone was allowed in it would be a mob scene.

Why do you distort the truth?

Wow. They have a lot in common too with both Prayut and thaksin running the country without a mandate from the people.

Of course Prayut never put up the charade that he was democratic. Only that he was restoring democracy because the former ran the country without a mandate from the people under the banner of democracy.

Maybe the General can have a scoot around the high end bars and nightclubs for a certain member of the Red Bull family?

I am sure there is far higher possibility of having him extradited from a country where it is fairly clear cut, rather than TS, where rightly or wrongly there are many political issues to contend with.

Obviously the reform of the judiciary is not something on the agenda, as we should all trust it.

So, why would Thaksin be present? Why would the Singapore government want to risk a possible diplomatic incident involving a private foreign person and an officially invited dignitary?

Correct, the agenda is the state funeral and reception for Singapore's Founding Father. With invited dignitaries, Singapore Police and Military around and no "who am I to do so" Thaksin around I would imagine.

We'll remind all about what they wrote here, after the events took place.

Seeing as though Thailand is still 99.99% democratic, don't you think it's taking the General a long time to sort out that last 0.01% to fully restore Thai democracy?

So, Thaksin may greet PM Prayut if they meet.

Other possibilities, allegedly that is, are

-Thaksin may not greet PM Prayut if they meet

- Thaksin may wave a few fingers from afar if they not meet

- Thaksin waves a few fingers at PM Prayut and gets forcefully removed by Singapore police for making a disturbance at a very inappropriate time and place

- Thaksin will not meet PM Prayut and therefor will not greet him

- Singapore security staff detailed to protect Thaksin keep him from making a fool of himself

- Thaksin having annoyed the Singapore government with his talks keeps him from attending any ceremony at which official dignitaries like invited Head of States and PMs are present

- Thaksin is helped to leave the country as soon as possible

Keep in mind that the Singapore government and population are in mourning. They do not need and certainly do not want anything to distract them. IMHO.

I think on these occasions there is not much chance of a person going along as an individual will bump into Prime Ministers and Presidents whilst having a few at the Wake

Correct. The premise of the story is just an opportunity to yank the general's chain. Total silliness.

Its also an insult to the readers intelligence. In all reality these 2 men are deadly enemies and these mongs are trivializing the remote possibility that they might meet like some syrupy Teen magazine

On the other hand it wouldn't surprise if the red bull boy is at home here in Bkk keeping a very very low profile. I can't see, if determined and with some help, it would be too difficult to take a boat out of Singapore outside of passport controls etc., and enter Thailand the same way on an isolated island / beach or whatever.

Agree all round. Further if they did happen to meet or be in the same location etc., then it would be totally inappropriate for either of them to speak or whatever and the good general. As he's already said, he cannot act alone to arrest thaksin, the first reason being that he has no legal standing in Singapore to take such an action.

You would think that the Singaporeans will show discretion. If those two met and there were pictures taken it would upstage the funeral

It must be a real struggle to put the right spin on things sometimes eh?

The General should handcuff him and ask for his immediate extradition !

and the internationally recognised charge is?

Winning two elections against the wishes of the "good people", and then winning two more by proxy?

Actually its not an internationally recognised charge - more an internationally recognised reason.....
