Wheat grain - where to buy?

Anyone know if wheat grain is availble in Chiang Mai ?

Looking for non GMO whole grains to put through my home flour mill.

I get Bob's Red Mill grains at RimPing. You should tour all the RimPings and get what you can, ziplock bag the grains and store in the refrigerator or freezer. Sometimes there are wheat substitutes like titricale or farro.Just write down all the "wheats" so you can get something. There is some excellent bread flour from Australia. Sometimes King Arthur flour, a top bread flour from the U.S. Makro has yeast and baking supplies.

Best wishes,

Suzanne

Thanks Suzanne,

Bob's Red Mill is way too expensive - as I understand it wheat, rye etc is imported in Thailand in bulk - need to find an importer I guess.

Looking for whole live unprocessed grains only - not flour.

I know that on occasion Bakersmart has carried rye berries. Don't recall if they offered wheat. As for finding guaranteed non-GMO what, this is Chiangmai, not California. I did read that Australia is testing GMO wheat that has a more benign form of gluten. So maybe you'll have to make a choice between a GMO creation with less of the evil gluten or a natural variety bristling with the evil stuff. Maybe they could make a movie out of it like Godzilla vs. King Kong.

Thanks quidnunc - had a look and asked the people in charge where the wheat grains were from - one guy said Australia and the other said USA ??

USA and GMO's go hand in hand - Australia officially bans it.

As I understand it GMO is banned in Thailand also but I've had NGO's tell me that it's not strictly enforced.

Anyone have any info / input ?

Actually, Australia doesn't ban GM crops. However, no GM wheat is currently being grown commercially in Australia or the USA. Just lots of tests of various varieties in the USA
