Pongpat Chayapan, former CIB (Central Investigation Bureau) chief, has had his sentence extended by the Criminal Court. The court added an additional two years and six months to his sentence for the illegal possession of historic artefacts. Initially, the courts sentenced Pongpat to five years, but that sentence was reduced by half.

The case was filed against the ex-CIB chief after 51 artefacts were recovered by authorities in a search of his home. Pongpat was in violation of the law for keeping artefacts without notifying the Fine Arts Department’s director-general. Courts found Pongpat guilty.

Just last year, Pongpat was hit with various charges, including misconduct, violation of Section 112 of the Criminal Code, demanding and accepting bribes, and malfeasance.

Officials noted that some of the assets seized by the Anti-Money Laundering Office were antiques, and those items would be sent to museums if they did not sell at auction. Among the antiques confiscated from Pongpat’s home were ancient Buddha statues. Other valuables, including expensive watches, were put up for auction. The second auction of the ex-CIB chief’s assets garnered 7 billion baht.

The court’s recent extension to Pongpat’s sentence means his total sentence now sits at 33 years and three months.

It is unbelievable that this Pongpat doesn't know any "connected" people, who he could donate a few greenbacks to end his legal woes. He must not be the sharpest tool in the box, being the only rich fella to ever see the inside of a Thai prison. If you are reading this mate, try giving the guard a "favor" he might reward you with a cigarette if you did it properly( act like you are enjoying yourself).

Amazing how he reached the rank and position he did while up to his neck in all sorts of things and nobody knew anything about it ! giggle.gif

Suddenly in one fell swoop his little world fell apart.

Of course there's other issues involved with this story but we're not allowed to mention them on the forum

this circle jerk has gone on long enough, he has been found/pleaded guilty, sensentence deliverered/reduced/added to, etc the mans in jail has impressive guard escort, now lets go catch more of the same type along with those so called leaders who are/have been so instrimintal in moving vast funds through a network that our brillent, banks, finance group, dsi amlo, etc can not seem to unravel.

its a shame that the brains seem to be either in or elighable to be in jail while the dogs are still looking for which end has the tail on it.

In the past a top banker was jailed & fined 2 billion (I think), a former health minister was sentenced to 15 years for which he served qy\uite a bit of time before release, a top cop (killing a mother & son of a jeweller involved in the gems case) sentenced to death but now reduced to life. I realise many are still walking free who deserve to be in jail but Pongpat is not the only one.

Good point, but this top cop embroiled in the blue diamond affair didn't do real time - although it was 19yrs. He lived in a special suite inside the prison which used to be the ICU and had manservants and as much JW black label as he could drink. Not a real prison sentence, and almost certainly he was being looked after by the real brains/clout behind the crime. Makes me wonder what Pongpats cell looks like, plush opulence I'll bet, with a few ancient artifacts for decor.

The 'connected' people ARE his legal woes. I shall leave it there..
