Russia could sell Thailand planes, to buy more rubber

BANGKOK: -- Russia has an opportunity to sell Thailand military planes and other defence equipment because some Western countries may be reluctant to do business with the military government running the Asian country, Russia's trade minister said on Wednesday.

Our friends from the Western part of the world are ignoring Thailand," Denis Manturov told Reuters in an interview in Bangkok, where he has accompanied Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on an official visit.

He also said that Russia could buy at least 80,000 tonnes of rubber from Thailand in 2016, which he said was more than four times what it planned to purchase in 2015.

Meanwhile Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said that Thailand and Russia aim to double annual bilateral trade in 2016 to $10 billion. He was speaking after signing five agreements with Medvedev in Bangkok.

Medvedev’s visit to Thailand is the first by a Russian prime minister for 25 years, lending high profile international support to a Thai military government that has faced opprobrium from old ally the United States for ousting a democratic government in May.

The visit comes just a week after Prayuth’s government came under fire from some Western countries and the United Nationsfor lifting martial law only to replace it with sweeping security powers for the military.

"We exchanged opinions on how to boost trade to $10 billion next year," Prayuth said in a statement read to reporters after meeting Medvedev.

Might be able to get a good deal on a slightly singed nuclear sub too.

Russian "advisors" back in SE Asia again, now who would have expected that?

Lots of retraining needing done for the RTAF from their Western jets to Russians ones, the Russians have some pretty good fighter jets, like the Su27 and Mig 29, both getting on in their years though and high maintenance.

Maybe they'll get some Yak 38's for their aircraft carrier as a swap for the rubber !!!

Getting into bed with the Russians and the Chinese isn't the smartest thing to do, unless you work on walking street!!

Still better than not getting any.......

Getting any what? Military aircraft? Well whose fault would it be if nobody but the Chinese and Russians wanted to do business with Thaialnd mate?

See if I got this right?

Because Thailand is considered a pariah by the international community, only another pariah will do business with them...

Not very diplomatic, but probably true!!

I hope the US is looking at what is happening here. They are about to lose any vested interest in Thailand by their own actions pushing Thailand away into the waiting arms of opposing countries.

The US is looking to the Philippines and Vietnam. No use to get involved with Thailand. Let the Thai government do whatever it wants. Too many unpredictable situations in Thailand. Russian TV and movies. Russian food. Chinese manners and generosity. All this will replace what those nasty Americans brought with them. Let Thailand enjoy its new partners, their culture, and their lifestyle.

Yes indeed. a fate worse than death for most Thais.

...but it ain't gonna happen bro.

The attraction of western culture - if you can call it that - is too strong.

I'm not predicting anything, but if Japanese and US private sector manufacturers got nervous and moved to more stable developing countries it would be devastating to the Thai economy. Thailand's high import duties for raw materials and parts is already a turnoff.

There isn't a lot of new investment in Thailand, only complaints about what's existing. Next if Thailand actually raises its minimum wage as is being discussed, Thais could become persona non grata.

If the PM keeps dissing the West and kissing up to tin pot losers, he'll just become one of them.

China-India axis? Yeah, right!

BRICS

You do realize that "BRICS" is an acronym invented by Wall Street, not a real organization, don't you?

You are wrong

The term "BRICS" was coined in 2001 by then-chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Jim O'Neill, in his publication Building Better Global Economic BRICs.[

As of 2014, the five BRICS countries represent almost 3 billion people, or approximately 40% of the world population. The five nations have a combined nominal GDP of US$16.039 trillion, equivalent to approximately 20% of the gross world product, and an estimated US$4 trillion in combined foreign reserves

I can remember when the UK sucked us Canadians into buying some broken down subs. One caught fire and broke down before we could sail them across the ocean to Canada.

I am surprised the USA is pushing Thailand away. They really do not care who they trade with. Take a look at China where human rights are non-existent. The west should not be trading with any country that has no human rights platform period. But then they are all wh*res in the end.

They might be able to get a An-225 Mriya. Could carry Yingluk's luggage when she does a moonlight flit.

I didn't remember all details, so had to check this, but it seems only one ever got build to completion and is still in use. Regularly hired to transport large things. Also the plane seems to be Ukrainian by now.
