Dental Surgery

I am in need of a dental procedure called an Apicoectomy, (see http://www.dcendo.com/svcapico.htm )due to a persistent infection that root canal treatment won't get rid of. Any suggestions on where I can get this done? The dentists here wont touch it, and frankly I would not have most of them touch it either. I suppose that I have to find a hospital with a good dental surgical capability. I live in Samui but would travel to have the procedure done. Any suggestions?

Bangkok Nursing and Bumrungrad Hospitals both have excellent dental depts and both have extensive websites where you can get the answer to your question quickly...

Thanks for your reply, but neither websites have any info regarding dental surgery. I will keep looking for now. - J

You need to see a specialist called an Endodontist. Most probably if the Root canal is well redone you dould be OK, if there is a crown and post in the tooth both would have to be removed before the retreatment.

PM me and I will send you a list of Endodontists. All are in Bangkok, four of them are members of the American Assn of Endodontists which signifies some advandced education at least. Two of them are at at Mahidol. They would also do the apico if required.

apicectomies are performed when there is a persistent infection at the root tip . these infections usually originate in the last millimetre or so of the root canal of the tooth , due to an incomplete root filling. (there are many reasons for an incomplete root filling , not all of them due to poor clinical procedure on the part of the dentist).

if there is a crown and post in the tooth , then it will in all probability , be impossible to remove , and an attempt at removal could possibly fracture the root along its long axis.

the best way to remove the focus of infection in the root tip is to remove the root tip itself , through a small incision in the gum and an access hole through the thin cortical plate of bone covering the root.

the root tip is removed and the root filling is tidied up and the gum stitched back. its a simple enough procedure , but best carried out by an experienced dentist.

the dental hospital in bangkok , near to samitivel hospital on sukhumvit 41?? is the place to go.

the success rate with this procedure is not 100% , i.e. the infection may recur in the future.

12 years since the last reply to this question.  Have there been any updates in anyone's experiences since that time as I am in need of the apicoectomy surgery as one tooth of a three tooth crown has become infected several times.  Treatment with anti-biotics has previously solved the problem but do not wish to continue with this type of treatment.  Many dental specialists say they can do it but often lots of talk but little experience in this procedure.

That giant dental university just over the strait there in Penang I was considering on embarking on a dental procedure    Try  medifee,then procedure alongside it
