BANGKOK: -- A taxi driver, who ran over a traffic policeman, stole his gun and shot dead a middle-aged couple in Nonthaburi's Bang Yai district on Friday, surrendered to police yesterday reportedly out of fear that he would be killed while on the run.

Anupong Reungsawat, 29, allegedly ran over Sgt-Major Jakkri Palasin while he was directing traffic, resulting in him sustaining a serious head injury and broken shoulder and leg.

He then killed apartment landlord Somchai Thaenjantha, 52, and his wife Sangwal, 50.

Anupong told police he shot the couple because they often scolded him for being too noisy at the apartment.

He claimed the couple recently humiliated him in front of other tenants by scolding him for playing a guitar too loud.

He also claimed the couple ransacked his room.

Anupong surrendered at Taling Chan Police Station and officers from Bang Mae Nang Police Station later picked him up.

The gun was located behind a gas station as per Anupong's confession.

Provincial Police Region 1 commander Lt-General Amnuay Nimmano attended the interrogation before Anupong was brought to re-enact the alleged crime amid tight security.

He is facing charges of the attempted murder of an on-duty police officer, stealing a police officer's gun, double premeditated murder and carrying a gun in a public place without permission. National police chief General Somyos Poompanmuang yesterday visited Jakkri at Police General Hospital.

Thainess.

Why do people here have to make gratuitous comments like this. This kind of thing happens all over the world and has nothing to do with "Thainess". Sad but true !!!

Was, by any chance, Artisi referring to the play acting ?

.

Because this is Thai Visa, not EU Visa, or Canada Visa.

And because he is right.

He claimed the couple recently humiliated him in front of other tenants by scolding him for playing a guitar too loud.

It's called Face, and the Thai version is on the extreme edge.

This has everything to do with Thainess.

The whole essence of Thainess is to never criticize anybody to their face in case they should suffer public humiliation, a fate worse than death for most Thais.

Because, as we all know, Thais can do no wrong. Even when they are keeping the whole neighbourhood awake with their 3am partying, even when they are driving down the street the wrong way and even when they illegally block the pavements in front of their houses or shops with rubbish or displays of goods.

How many times do we read about a killing carried out by someone who feels as if they have been criticised, scolded, or that their actions have been questioned and they didnt like it. Didnt like it enough to get a gun and come back and kill.

Murders do happen all over the world, perhaps not with the same high frequency as in Thailand, which has a shockingly high rate, but the speed with which a Thai male will resort to violence over a relatively insignificant stimulus is I think unique.

Anupong told police he shot the couple because they often scolded him for being too noisy at the apartment.

He claimed the couple recently humiliated him in front of other tenants by scolding him for playing a guitar too loud.

This snivelling little worm is a perfect example of Thai manhood, spoilt from birth by a doting Mother who never said "No" giving him an inflated sense of self importance and misplaced righteousness that makes him a walking danger to anybody who crosses his path.

To be fair, the report does use the word 'allegedly' which is a first I think. Crime reconstructions are really only useful when events are so confused that even the 'alleged' culprit can't reallt remember what happened. It should be carried out away from the public view so as not to influence anyone who might have anything to say about the verdict. The fotos of that 'reconstruction' (this is the way we are telling you it happened) on Koh Tao were disgraceful, making them put crash helmets on ridiculous. Instructions were given at one point not to do this but that seems to have been forgotten about.

You can do anything to a Thai person but don't cause him to lose face, you can enslave, cheat, lie

and robed them, tell them all kind of crap promises and bribe them with peanuts, but when it comes

to losing face in front of others, there is none more fortuitous animal than a scorned Thai....

Every article in which a Thai person does something negative is filled with the same vitriolic bile again and again. Bad people exist - and more of them exist in places with less economic opportunities and educational quality. But don't tar everyone with the same brush.

I've been here more than a few years and can't honestly recall ' Thainess ' being used until YL started, on her many overseas trips, saying she wanted to export it etc.

Agreed, but "loss of face" can cause huger problems in places like Hong Kong and Thailand often leading to violence. Where as in the UK or USA no one would give a "rats a**e" about it. To Stradavarius37 I hope that you quickly learn this about this culture.

And I have been saying for ages whoever coined the term "Thainess" should be dragged out the back and flogged.

Can you imagine if every time there was a negative story regarding someone from the UK that the term "Britishness" was used ? The Brits would go off, and rightly so.

Or if the words "Aussieness, Americaness etc were thrown around ?

It is a stupid term which is used by lazy Thai bashers, that's all.

Another nutter who would be better taken off the streets for good unless his brother or uncle are some sort of General then he will be safe just to release again as long as he promises never to do this ever ever again.
