Public health care reform to benefit people with special needs

BANGKOK, 6 May 2015 (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health is expediting the improvement of Thailand’s health care system, amid an aging population.

Department of Medical Services Director-General Suphan Srithamma said that changes have been made to medical services in the country in the past six months, catering to all types of medical care.

Patients requiring special medical attention, such as those diagnosed with terminal illnesses, disabilities and the elderly, are expected to receive better care.

Dr. Suphan said the system overhaul will also prepare Thailand for its aging demographic. Among the ministry’s several goals is promoting an independent and healthy lifestyle for the elderly.

In addition, doctors and health care volunteers will make house calls for people with disabilities. They will be encouraged to register under the health care system to receive privileges provided for the disabled.

The Department of Medical Services is also aiming to provide prosthetic legs to 10,000 people within the next year.

Healthcare indeed is improving gradually. Still many need to be reached.

There's this clinic where kids are nursed with Aids or kids born with HIV. Healthcare does not reach those Thai citizens. Ministry of public health could do some promoting for understanding of groups that are rejected by so many people.

Dropping even babies because the mom has HIV is as cruel as what happens to the people in the trafficking camps in the south (or elsewhere). The wife did some charity projects for the kids in the clinic. The response was impressive. Means that decent information and some lovely pics of playing kids can influence general attitude towards topics that are more or less taboo.
