Hello TV.Members
Looking for information for a good friend and would highly appreciate don’t get any long renditions on who, why, what on overstay grilling - knowing all the ramifications in that regard.

FACTS:

  1. He has overstayed 3 months down to a belated sale of a property in UK now sold and ex-wife problems causing delays and hindering him to death.
  2. His UK Passport is still valid for five years but no pages left down to having too many stamps.

Questions:

3) Could he apply in person with the overstay on his passport - at Trendy house for a new passport application without any trouble then fly to Laos to clear the overstay and return.

  1. Could he fly to Laos and make an application there - then fly to BKK again with new Passport.
  2. Could he apply online for a new passport coming from UK passport website posted to hin in BKK then fly to Laos to pay off overstay with old Passport or would this cause problems having 2 passports in tow albeit new & old.
  3. How long would any of these options take regarding getting new passport back from UK start to finish.
  4. Would just flying to UK and making application there be the last resort?

Not looking for any snide remarks please. Just would be grateful for you wonderful knowledgeable people to part with good information that would benefit him and relieve him from further worry. Furthermore, if per chance you have a better solution than has been incorporated above would be highly obliged.

Thanking you in advance

He can apply for his new passport at Trendy without a problem. The UK passport office does not care about a persons legal status in the country when a application is made.

After he gets his new passport he can fly out and pay the overstay on departure from the country. He would show both passports and immigration would transfer the entry stamp from his old passport to the new one then do the overstay and departure stamps in his new passport. After he pays 20k baht overstay fine.

He can apply for a new passport and then go to Laos, pay the overstay fine, clear immigration - using the old passport. Enter Laos on the new one, he may need to show the immigration officer his old passport, and then apply for a new Thai visa.

I've done it with my old, full passport without problems. I wasn't on overstay though.

I'm not positive, but a friend here recently had to get a new UK passport. Seems they actually only provide a new one from the UK (unlike a USA passport which can be done through the consulate here), so after he sent his current passport and all required documents, it took almost three months to get the new passport back. During that time he was relatively stuck as he had no passport. I am guessing from the previous posts you can apply for the new passport while retaining yours, but it might be quite a while before the new one arrives, and of course every day is an overstay.

I do not think your friend would be able to enter Laos with a full passport to apply there. As ubonjoe says, getting a new passport from Trendy is no problem, but your friend's status cannot be regularized until the new passport is received (2-6 weeks after appointment with Trendy?)

Least risk, it seems to me, albeit expensive would be to go to the UK. This can be done with the full passport, and a new passport acquired quickly.

Yes a UK passport comes from the UK but you do not send the old one back. You keep it for ID purposes. And it was taking months last year for the process but reports recently suggest 2-3 weeks is quite normal now.

If his passport is still good for another five years, can he not just have pages added?

He is from the UK and they do not add pages.

As far as I know the US is the only country that currently adds pages to a passport but that will it end in January.

Nope, sorry he's British, they can't do that. Only Americans (and maybe a few other nationalities) can do this now, and Americans will lose that ability too on 1 Jan 2016. Security measure.

The OP's friend would need to fly into Laos in order to 'flip' passports, ie. re-enter Thailand on a different passport than the one he just exited Thailand on. Ubonjoe did specify this but subsequent posts citing actual experience of doing this were not specific on mode of travel.

Does the Lao Immigration prohibit passport flipping on a land border crossing like Thai Immigration?

If there are no issues with the support documentation, pictures, etc., current UK passport renewals at VFA Trendy are taking from 14 - 18 days going by recent posts.

I don't see anywhere in the OP where was a mention of doing a passport swap. He did mention about applying for a passport in Vientiane instead of Bangkok because of the unneeded worry about having an overstay in his passport when he applies at Trendy.

I replied as if he got the new passport here. There is no swap needed or possible because the old one will be stamped cancelled and the corners cutoff. Everything is done on departure from the country.

My apologies. Speed reading again.

could even fly back to the UK, get a new passport within one day, and fly back, get a visa on arrival, and be legally here.

UK citizens are visa exempt, for 30 days.
