NoshowJones Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Is Thailand the only country where your driving licence which has you address on it, is not recognised as proof of residency? If any of the 'if you don't like it go home' brigade are reading this, just run along to the next topic.
bill1369 Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 I moved a couple years ago and went to driving license office to change my address on license. They said I must wait until my 5-year D/L expires then change address. If a person can only change address once every 5 years, I guess that's reason enough to consider the D/L address as unreliable.
KhunBENQ Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 The address on my DL is useless/arbitrary. No idea where it points to. When I noticed it was too late (back home 100 km). And that happened with a full set of documents from Khon Kaen immigration

Good point Bill, just another case of TiT.

A drivers licence is not proof of residency, in the same manner that a residency certificate or residency card is not proof that you are legally allowed to operate a motor vehicle A drivers licence is just that, a drivers licence which happens to have an address on it, it infers no residency status

In Thailand rules are made by each individual so just ask someone else eventually get a right answer
lovetotravel Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 I have never once shown my passport, always had my licence accepted Almost always required when doing serious banking transactions. A car purchase also required the passport.

If you lose your bank book for any reason and someone withdrawals money from your account (without any ID check), you won't be grinning ear to ear..

Not any different from losing a credit card or checkbook. Most of the time when need more than I can get from the ATM or have to make a deposit I just send one of the staff. They do check the signature carefully.
jackson369 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Hi are you haveing a thai ceremony.? Until you register the marriage with the Thai gov there is no legal standing.

Yes I found that out too. I moved to Surin 4 years ago with a 5 year licence. But they wouldnt change the address. Yet I was stopped by the police (no ticket) Who said I must get it changed.Still no joy at vehicle licensing though. Oh well I tried.

uptheos Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 I think they will change it at Chiang Mai with a new Certificate of Residence. But there is a fee for new licence and photo. Truth is most people don't know their address is on the back coz its in Thai.
