Heavy rains expected in North, Northeast

BANGKOK: -- Several provinces in Thailand's North and Northeast are expecting heavy rains Sunday and Monday, according to a weather forecast issued by Meteorological Department.

The announcement said low temperatures from China were now passing through the kingdom's Lower North, Upper Central and Lower Northeastern regions and the cold front could bring heavy rains to several provinces.

It urged people living near mountains, waterways and in low-lying areas to be alert to possible flash floods Sunday and Monday.

Meanwhile, heavy downpours were reported Saturday night in the northern province of Uttaradit, causing flooding in at least one village as high as one metre. Many villagers were forced to evacuate their homes and are now taking shelter with relatives in safer areas.

Rain is continuing in Uttaradit and floodwaters remain high.

Severe floods continued in several northern provinces Saturday, closing schools for an indefinite period, while rice crops and fruit plantations are destroyed.

Possible floods from heavy rain in the lower North, upper Central, and Northeast

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning that the lower North, the lower Central, and the Northeast of Thailand will continue to encounter heavy precipitation.

The department stated that this is due to the low pressure that is covering the three regions of Thailand. The affected northern provinces include Mae Hong Son, Tak, Lampang, Phrae, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Sukhothai, Phichit, and Petchabun. The provinces in the central region which are likely to encounter heavy downpour include Nakhon Sawan, Chainat and Lopburi.

Residents living along the waterways and sloping areas are warned of possible flood hazards during this period.

Schools in Phitsanulok closed indefinitely due to flash floods

At least ten school in Phitsanulok were closed indefinitely as students and teachers could not go to classes after flash floods hit the province.

Most of the schools that were forced to close were in Bangrakam district, where is the hardest hit by the flood.

Thienchai Jujia, director of provincial education department, said the floods happened after consecutive days of heavy rains. The water level in Yom River was so high that it poured over the banks onto local villagers' houses.

Thienchai said each school in the province can make its own decision whether to cancel classes or not or when it would resume the classes.
