Soldiers to Reform Student Gangs, Thai Official Says

Soldiers board a bus in Pathum Thani that was attacked by students in an incident of suspected gang violence, 18 May 2015.

BANGKOK — Thai education officials may institute an army-run "prep camp" aimed at diffusing long-running gang rivalries between students at polytechnic colleges in Bangkok.

Chaiyapruek Serirak, sec-gen of the Vocational Education Commission (VEC), said the orientation program would feature lectures from army officers, and be open to students from different schools.

"They would mix with students from other colleges, join in activities together, and get to know each other," Chaiyapruek said today. "Tomorrow I will invite directors of 22 'risky' colleges, both private and state-owned, for a joint meeting to empathize measures to prevent further fights."

A similar camp was held at a Navy base in Chonburi province earlier this year.

Gang violence between students at Thailand's technical colleges is common, and occasionally leads to injuries or even deaths of students and bystanders.

This will be as effective as starting a US led war in Iraq.

What are the soldiers expecting to do?

Riding on buses will mean the violence is rescheduled to take place away from buses.

The army could play a key role though. Draft everyone convicted of gang violence.

Boot camp, ten years of forced hard labour for all gang members throughout Thailand and they will be "reformed" smile.png

No mercy on those empathy depraved thugs, who have no respect for anything or anyone and who pull the names of their parents into the dirt. After typing this... I'd say let make it 15 years instead, hard labour I mean...

This does not implicate that I am not aware of the fact that some parents are also responsible.

Don't quite understand how this bus tangent has come into play.

The idea is courses, the type of thing that has been standard practice in Western youthwork circles for light years, normally outdoor pursuits-based and including huge amounts of teamwork, where all attendees are mixed away from friendship groups, etc.

In London, UK, one of the most fantastic courses is run by the fire brigade. Trust me these courses, taking young people out of their normal environments, really do work. Youth workers really did lobby strongly to get "their" young people on those courses. The fire-fighters got a lot out of them, too (way better than playing hand-ball all day long, waiting for a fire!). Maybe Thai Army and Navy personnel will become a bit more "civic" in their approach, just as the young people.

I have serious doubt that people who are trained to fight in combat have the ability of much needed qualified social workers in any attempt to pacify violent street gangs...

You may as well engage Thai monks to teach them integrity and incorruptibility.

It's the mutual respect of near-similars - much more listened to than that prattish social worker from a very different background. I know. I was one of those prattish social workers!

Other things:

1. Kids aren't often in situations where their life is dependent on following the instruction. Having to listen closely, then obey is new to them. I'm, for instance, thinking mountaineering, potholing, etc, though it could just be "flying" down a fire station tower.

2. Getting a certificate of achievement, for the first time ever, even a tatty piece of paper, means the world to these kids. Even the kids don't know that at the start of the course - they're so used to sneering at everything, from a base of regarding themselves as thoroughly useless. If the Thai Army and Navy are getting this right, they'll also give achievement certificates or cheap medals to their own personnel - for all the same reasons.

You forget that each army have schools where the instructors are also used to handle hardons. Not always with punichment, the army is not more the same then in our young times. I was 38 years in the army and saw the evolution.

Teambuildindg is one of the first things to achive with a new group ... so they learn to work TOGHETER, then you can strart the fighting training.

And this first step will be the point to to handle this gangmembers.

Are there military specialists to handle poor spellers?

I absolutely agree with you.

That's exactly what they are doing: Headhunting. Assessment of young talents in the field.

These young guys are natural born servants of the state. They bring all the needed core qualifications.

I won't elaborate any furhter as I don't want my post deleted.

Just have a look for yourself at the state of the state, in all of its branches.

These gangs were already armed and dangerous by the late 60s. Nothing has ever been done about them except some officials coming out with hot air from time to time. When they are arrested for murder and other crimes of violence, they often turn out to be sons of policemen and aren't prosecuted.

Yep, another great idea from the team that gave you compulsory attitude training for anyone who thinks outside the politically-correct box. Who better to teach kids the virtues of non-violence than a bunch of people trained to kill with their bare hands in 12 seconds.

Exactly , the students need to know how to make better bombs and what part of the bus to aim for .Training is the answer.

Send them home to their mothers she will take a 2X4 to their arse. Loosing face to and for the family works here. Secondly put them under Sutheps tutlage oops that may make matters worse.

Actually, you'd be quite surprised how attentive the audience can be, when you start describing the levels of violence that is needed to kill another person, and that violence and death through combat is nothing like video games, and that there's no single game out there can substitute the true feeling of knowing you actually might die, and no game can offer the highs and lows of the adrenalin rush.

I believe some institutions in the US of A have similar programs where the young wannabe are put into rooms with gang members who go into full on grizzly mode, and explain why they're behind bars, it's a bit of a shock tactic.

Works on some, doesn't on others, violence and violent behaviour is often generic and simply in the jeans ( pun intended ;) )

Did you serve in the Royal Thai military? You know, the one that keeps overthrowing its own elected governments and abrogating people's constitutions. Not a very good role model for preaching peace and civility through rule of law.

Reading this and the other TVF sponsored stories today makes me think they should just go ahead and rename the country

Daydreamland

Insert exasperated sigh here.

No not in the Thai army even I was ask by a officer of the marins to teach in EOD. My partner did his term in the RTMC. I visit many camps and even sleep there.

The lower ranks has NOTHING to do with what the army top is and are used to work with people of al nature.

TEAMBUILDING is THE FIRST STEP and do not include any military training. In Belgium the adolesents can make a 14 day summercamp in the corps of there choise, this is like a scoutscamp but on a higher level, This is what this gangmembers need.

Please not forget that infact the RTA is the boss in THA.

And who does the handling of hardons? Some may be interested in meeting them? whistling.gif
