Yes it's Gary's wife with new partners while he is away on "vacation". She did a lot of the work at the old location and is doing the same thing with big and better equipment.

I'm not sure how much business it's doing or maybe the new partners don't understand the cuisine but I've been there 3 times and seems to be not as good each time.

Does anyone know how much longer he will be in jail or what his sentence was? It seems like it should not be much longer.

His wife is a very nice lady, but I imagine the place would run better with a farang making sure the taste is correct.

I think part of it was Gary was a likeable character and him holding court and entertaining the customers was part of the draw. I can remember a few drawn out lunches kibitzing with the boys from the old country there (or at least our Grandparents were). Totally agree she is lovely but it's set-up more like a take-away counter, even though there is tables for dining in, which is not the full deli experience that I'd prefer for 300 bht a sandwich.

Me too.

Bob was not what I would consider a "chef" in any sense of the word, but his roast beef sandwiches were to die for. He bought really high quality imported beef and did everything just right in the marinating/roasting process. I never could figure out how he could sell them for what - 75 Baht or something ridiculous....that is until I discovered the sandwiches were only a "front" for another business!

We had been there at the old location a few times when she was doing it alone. She did a very good job by her self. I suspect with no help and a son to raise alone plus the weekly visits to Visit Gary wore her down.

We had lunch there a week or so ago. The corned beef on rye was as good as it has ever been.

However, they are no longer married and she continues the work on her own. I think she is doing a great job!

Ribs aren't quite what they used to be. She said the business partner has their own meat supplier, who they get a different cut from. Hopefully they will let her change back, cause the ribs used to be the bomb!

Nothing against Bob, but I suspect that Hamburger Mike was responsible for the quality of the food. They were partners in a roast beef sandwich place around the corner until Mike quit and Bob opened Spanky's with pretty much the same menu.

Guess you didn't notice how he treated his wife at the restaurant. He gave me the creeps. And not just me. Lots of others, too.

After just correcting someone in another post who incorrectly "assumed" (their words) something I see that now someone is "guessing" what I did or didn't notice.

If you want to know something that only I know feel free to ask me and find out the truth, not act, perhaps passively aggressively, and basically publicly speak for my experiences that you know nothing about.

I am not condoning Gary's actions in this or other matters, or even care to comment on it at this point, but was just remarking purely in reflection of how the difference in the businesses might be affected by having a host out front who drew in customers with his personality (which happened no matter your personal opinion of the man or his actions).

As for "lots of others too" I guess it's easy to represent phantom people but please refrain from any attempt to represent me in the future.

I like Gary's ex-wife and not only wish her all the best but I have actively supported her new endevour by being a customer, giving professional advice when asked and posted it on popular Chiang Mai food sites among other efforts all solely for her benefit, which I was more then happy to do.

There were several posting on thaivisa.com about various unpleasant encounters with him. And if you did notice how he treated his wife, why would you want to spend any time with him?

Posted

Again mysteries, feel free to share the "several postings in thaivisa.com" if you actually having anything of substance to post.

As for why I'm even letting you bate me into this, I guess it's just a real slow day for me. But please don't interpret it in any way that I believe you deserve the courtesy as I clearly explained my purpose and followed by saying that I don't care to to comment further about the man in question.

As for your question, which is convoluted as it's not a straight forward but one with an "if" and again an assumption of something. I don't see anywhere that I did or didn't say if I wanted to, didn't want to or even ever actually had spend anytime with him.

Maybe you can't find posts to back-up your theories but I know for sure I'll use yours in this thread to show how some TV members like to think they're a know it all while not only being wrong on many accounts but in the process might be misrepresenting a person they don't know or have any idea or their moral fortitude.

If you only knew the whole story concerning my interactions and relationship with all the people involved I think most individuals, and maybe even you, would be properly embarrassed. (This might give one a clue as to why I chose not to divulge information of a personal matter and stick only to the business aspect)

I will not be posting in this thread again out of respect for most of the involved parties.

Glad to hear the lady is reopened. Hard worker. Good person. Gary, a little caustic.

But his pastrami and corned beef second to none! Problem was 300 baht per sandwich. I had no problem with it but I'm sure alot did. I wish her luck and will be trying the new place.

As he is a Butcher and a convicted one at that, when released he probably will be escorted out of the country having his book thrown at him with an irreversible black mark. Everyone I spoke with agreed that his food was A1, just not him personally. Good luck to the ex making her life and the restaurant work.

Yesterday I had a religious experience. I had a Reuben at pickles. I rarely attach a dollar sign to a great meal but is wasn't cheap but is was worth it

Can you give directions to Pickles. the phone number on their site is to a Japanese restaurant. I know it is not on the corner. Is it on Soi 5 some place or a road of soi 5. there web page said Nimmanahaemida road Lane 5

Edit

You are correct they are a bit pricey. I and two friends ate there at the old location several times and the meal was well worth it.

If you are on Nimmen heading south, turn right just after the Siam Commercial Bank. That is Nimmen Soi. 5,

Pickles is tucked behind House of Wine about a block east of Nimmen, and it is on the north side of the street, opposite the Godzilla statue.

UG, I will stop by there hopefully today and ask if they do deliveries.

Thanks. I asked today and they said no, but are considering one of the delivery services. It took me a long time to find the place, but better directions here now. It is NOT on Nimmen Road. It is on soi 5 and it is hard to see from the street.
