Can I renew my five year driver's license at any land transport office in Thailand.

Originally issued in Chiang Mai but they used my Bangkok work permit address instead of my Chiang Mai address.

Not sure, but you normally need either a letter of residency (which would show your Chiang Mai address), or address in your work permit book. Seems like if they used your BKK address but issued the first license in Chiang Mai, they would do so again, but hopefully someone has a more definitive answer.

For my renewal I just went to the motor office in afternoon (morning is clogged with new license people), took a number and waited. I had changed my address so gave them the official form I got from Phuket Immigration. Wait about 20 mins for others in front of me, then they called me up, took photo, I signed the form and paid, had the license a few minutes later.

A buddy renewed a 5year one in BKK 2 months ago, he told me he had to sit a new exam which he failed, had to resit it and bribe for help to pass the next day.

What is with this new test on your first 5year renewalal ?

It's difficult to fail the 5-year renewal tests! Most people get about 3 attempts and then they just show pity and let you pass. Is he colour-blind or something?

I think the worst part of the renewal is having to sit through an hour long Thai drama masquerading as a safety video. I came out of it thinking that they had actually said not wearing a seatbelt is safer than wearing one as a kid wearing seatbelt gets paralyzed in an accident in which his dad was driving recklessly and not wearing a seatbelt, who escapes the accident without any injury........ Genius!
