How Much Cash Can I Bring Into Thailand

Hi eveyone,

I am travelling back to Thailand on Friday from the UK, and need to take

with me about £10,000 in cash. It's to late now to put the cash into my

account and make a Swift money transfer.

Is there a restriction on the amount of cash you are allowed to take

through customs in the UK & Thailand.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Thank you for all your help, do you think I should declare it at Thai customs.

No, you have no reason to declare it!

I seem to remember somewhere reading that any amount over eqivalent of 10000 baht should be declared - but dont of course. You aint carrying £10 grand in CASH are you! OH so silly if you are....

UK-Customs would possibly be interested in someone carrying that much cash - thinking you might be carrying cash for illegal-stuff moving the other way. I would split it into 2-3 bundles, in different pockets/places, to reduce the likelihood of having to give the (entirely legal) reason, whatever that is. Also so that any pick-pocket fails to get the whole bundle !

I would not declare it to Thai-Customs. Why ? Unless you want to later take it back out of Thailand ?

When you bank it in Thailand, your bank has to notify the central-bank, for more-than £4kish, so your name will be on a list. But then, you might find it more convenient, to change it in 3 smaller sums anyway ?

Lastly I'd suggest that, provided it won't cause you problems with HM Inland-Revenue, you bank it & do a bank-transfer to Thailand anyway. Reason being that you'll get a better rate, perhaps several-10k Baht extra, which is worth having ! :D

And the bad news is that, since the Bank-of-England failed to raise interest-rates again last Thursday, your Pound will get you less-than 69 Baht today. :o

There won't be any problem at the Thailand end of the journey. But believe me U.K. customs will grill you if it gets picked up on the X-RAY scanner.

All cash over 2000 GBP deposited in CASH at U.K. banks is noted.

All cash over 2000 GBP carried by persons overseas is examined. They will want to know, where and how you got it, and then prove it.

If you withdrew it from your bank: keep your statements handy, and/or withdrawal slips.

A leading British horse racing trainer was arrested at a London airport for carrying just 20,000 GBP in cash......... Google it.

IMHO rather foolish to be carrying that amount of cash anywhere.

Why not bring £1,000 in cash and transfer balance which should arrive a couple of days later.

Declare it in Customs! (Especially if you're not planning to spend it all!!!)

You won't be able to take a large amount of 'cash' from Thailand when it's time to leave the country, unless of course you declared it before you came in!
