Two suspected insurgents are detained by security officers at a jungle outpost in Narathiwat province, 12 June 2015.

NARATHIWAT — The Thai military says it detained two members of the southern separatist movement following a gunfight in the border province of Narathiwat today.

More than 30 soldiers, police officers, and paramilitary rangers raided an outpost in the jungle behind Ipayae at 6am this morning after receiving intelligence that insurgents were gathering there to prepare attacks during the holy Islamic month Ramadan, said Col. Ekkawuth Kongkhakhet, the commander of the operation.

The security officers reportedly encountered gunfire from the militants, prompting them to return fire. Col. Ekkawuth said the gunfight lasted for 10 minutes, and that eight insurgents managed to escape while two others were captured by security officers. No injuries were reported.

The two suspects have been identified as Soma Samae and Ibrahim Uma. They are being detained at 48th Ranger Division for interrogation.

I see everyone sitting around and no one with a weapon guarding them. No wonder their losing.

Buy new glasses.. their hands are tied behind their backs, its hard to get up that way and run away.. also there are officers all around them.

8 escaped. 2 caught. Didn't bother setting out a cordon before you kicked the front door down then?

Why is the government using "security officers" and "paramilitary" to detect and apprehend suspected insurgents? Is the military short of soldiers that it has to use essentially contractors?

It has been the paramilitary and security officers that have repeatedly committed atrocities against innocent Malay-Thais that has helped fuel the conflict.

Do you need a gun to overpower a guy who has his hands tied behind his back ?

The guards would likely be posted outside the hut.

I think the decorative rugs add a touch of southern comfort to this jungle hideout.

Leave them alone in their whinging, you have probably noticed its the same ones who complain and gripe on every possible topic.

They should be pitied for the pathetic life they must lead.

In this instance I very much doubt that any one of them has ever been in a Thai jungle and has no idea the problems these brave men who tackle these armed insurgents face. No doubt having to hike for many KM through jungle with the ever present risk of death or injury from being shot at by those whose agenda is to kill.
