Thailand - Myanmar energy cooperations to be established

BANGKOK, 17 June 2015 (NNT) – The Ministry of Energy is set to establish joint committees to oversee Thailand's cooperation in petroleum and electricity with Myanmar.


The Minister of Energy Narongchai Akrasanee has revealed the outcome of his official visit to Myanmar, that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Thai Energy Minister and the Minister of Electric Power of Myanmar has been signed on energy cooperation. The MOU was also witnessed by the Thai Deputy Prime Minister Pridiyathorn Devakula and the Vice President of Myanmar.

The MOU constitutes on cooperation in the development of petroleum and electricity projects, including the establishment of separate joint committees for petroleum and for electricity.

The cooperation on petroleum will include the development of petroleum businesses in the downstream level, technical cooperative development in petroleum exploration, the Liquefied natural gas (LNG) system development, and a human resources development program and also the development of a vocational school on petroleum in Myanmar.

Cooperation programs on electricity include Thailand’s disclosure policy for Thai private companies to participate in the electricity production industry in Myanmar as a generator, the establishment of a power purchase agreement (PPA), the development of human resources in generation engineering, and the improvement of technology related to the electricity industry.

Thailand and Myanmar's cooperation in electricity will take place in three aspects, namely generation, transmission, and the distribution of energy with a concrete outcome on the operation level.
