Min of Agriculture and Cooperatives only allows rice to be grown on 3.4 million rai for now

BANGKOK, 17 June 2015 (NNT)-The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has advised farmers that the irrigated water supply to over 3.4 million rai of rice paddies won't be affected by the decision to reduce the amount of water released from four major dams.

The Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Pitipong Puengboon Na Ayutthaya said many farmers who have not yet begun to grow rice have been asked to postpone their rice planting until the end of July.

The Royal Irrigation Department had decided to lower the amount of water released into the irrigation system by half two days earlier. There is a total of 7.4 million rai of farmland in 22 provinces which receive an irrigated water supply from the Chao Praya River.

Around four million rai will have to wait until there is enough rain at the end of next month to grow rice. The Minister said the remaining farmers need to be aware of the current situation and follow the advice being given.

The Department of Royal Artificial Rain-making and Agricultural Aviation has been advised to monitor the weather conditions. It will then be ready to launch a rain making operation to increase the water levels in the dams whenever needed.

Bad reporting. It is needed NOW. The Dept will be ready whenever weather conditions are favorable to rain-making, which could be a long way off.

The farmers have already told your boss to shove it and you will get the same answer, They are fully aware if they plant too late, their crops will be desecrated from monsoonal floods. But you already know this Mr two faces, its all about the surplus rice stock that you can't get rid of. If you and your cohorts keep pushing the envelope too far by pinning the farmers backs to the wall, you may just see the true Thai farmer of yesteryear push back mighty hard.

OK tell your bloody farmers to start planting right now, and see how their rice crop does without irrigation water. Because it is needed for people to drink more than some miserable profit hardly worth the price of the water needed, when water is scarce.

Which part of 'drought" don't you understand?

No it isn't needed NOW. Where I am it is pouring and the rain is expected to be quite widespread.

The Junta can't afford to continue stockpiling more government-purchased rice a la Yingluck rice-pledge style and has decided farmers need to carry the brunt of a depressed market due to INTERNATIONAL oversupply, principally from India.

Prayut makes tough statements farmers know ultimately he will lessen their pain with MORE subsidies.

The bottom line is that the government has no overall PLAN to consolidate and modernize any of the nation's crop industries into effective PROFITABLE industries. And it's barely able to REACT in any effective manner to present circumstances that will continue to repeat themselves. And for the Junta's failure low income farmers will repeatedly be threatened with economic ruin.

Why do that. Its working perfectly. The majority of the profit goes to middle men and CP.

Where I am it rains for a bit most days but the government water supply to many villages is still not working after 5 months. Be happy that you get rain, most of the north, north east north west and a lot of central Thailand don't have enough.

So this government can control the weather and rainfall in Thailand now.

You are talking rubbish again as usual. Do you have ANY idea how little water there is in the dams in the north of Thailand or how many YEARS it will take to fill them once again.

Farmers want water for their crops. Non farmers want water to wash, shower, cook and clean with. If the farmers use the water for their crops where will the water for the non farmers come from?

The government is buying rice? All reports suggest they are trying (without much success) to sell it.
