My girlfriend and I are getting serious and I was thinking about starting a family here.

I don't believe it's a good place to raise children in Australia or any westernise country seeing how children turn out these days!

I was wondering is it hard to find work for a foreigner in Thailand? I have worked in many fields in Australia from sales, IT, customer service, general labourer, had a business for 10 years and now a personal trainer.

What are my options if I start a family here and wish to earn an income?

Do you have a degree, roughly how old are you?

There are many restricted professions, but for the suitably qualified and experienced there are niches into which one can slip.

Thailand is definitely not the easiest place to get a well paying position but they are out there, a little more about you and someone may be able to point you the right way.

Rose tinted glasses come to mind.

If you come to work here you'll (almost certainly) be joining the majority of Thais, plus most young foreigners with girlfriends by living 'hand to mouth'.

Great for a year or three until the honeymoon period wears off.

Get real. Working in Thailand is not a true career path for 95% of the foreigners here.

Think about it again after a couple of marriages in your own country, when you may have enough money behind you to retire here.

My opinion may be different than most....but....at 35, if you are an enterprenour, willing to learn the Thai and Chinese language perfectly, you may be on the right place. Import - exports is a great area in Thailand, and in any Asean country at this moment. Was even better years ago when America and Europe had strong buyer power, but now are replaced by China, India, Japan, etc.... Most western countries are not producing anything..are just buyers now...and most from "3rd world" countries like Thailand. The food export business is very strong in Thailand, and most Thai people, even the business people, doesn't have the knowledge or interest to keep growing....and some.....because its are making a lot of money....sabai.. ..sabai.

At 35....If you are smart and hard worker, with good computer and marketing skills...I believe.... really.... that you may have the chance of your life....Welcome to Thailand.

You haven't been here long enough, give it time,

remember HAND 2 MOUTH get used to it, and

if Australia is so bad (according to immigration

statistics) why is Australia the number 1 country

to immigrate to ? You are going from a 1st word

country to a 3rd world country, don't forget.

" a career path " ...?? lol

Life for many people ( including myself ) is NOT about getting a career. Its about finding away to make some money but more importantly to be happy and have fun along the way...

When you move to a new country you should forget what jobs you did in the past and try something new,you don't need much to live on in Thailand.Don't take life seriously ( or yourself ) and enjoy the life's adventure.

There are lots of great kids being raised in the western

Countries....It's 99%about The Parents and Parenting.

Unless you are an Engineer with a Masters Degree or

A CERTIFIED Teacher with a Masters Degree you' work

Very hard, six days a week for almost nothing compared

To Western salaries. Make your money in the West and

Retire here. You can can live rather nicely on about

B50000/month. Fitness trainer, you may get B15000/mo.

That's not living!!

"seeing how children turn out these days!"

Children don't "turn out"

They are raised properly or improperly by good or bad parents.

It doesn't matter what country they are raised in, the above applies.

Look at the big picture?

Taking care of self, wife & family is a big call.

Maybe your timing is out of whack.

Work in Oz BUT with a plan?

You have totaly missed the point, he want to get married, have a family, how can he do that. What do you do in Thailand and ED visa ????

The obvious things aside (English teaching, etc.) it's one of those 'if you have to ask, the answer is no' type questions. If you don't have a business which you can bring with you (and it doesn't sound like you have) or if you don't have some kind of opening/connection here already (and it doesn't sound like you have that either), then you'd be well advised to stay in Australia.

You got to be joking - thousands of affluent Thais send their Kids to Australia for their education - millions more would do likewise if they could afford it. It can be a violent society in Thailand with street gangs and the most appalling standards of education except for expensive International Schools.

A work permit for something quite specific and some money if self employed is required.

In all, these things are serious and need to be well thought out. Thailand is littered with failed Foreigners who had the dreams but not real plans to go with them. Relationships with Thai Women need to stand the test of time not just a few weeks or months. Remember also that Thais have a very different culture to us. When you marry one, their main duty is to provide for their Families. All to often, Foreigners are essentially meat on the table!

Unfortunately I may be not as negative as many posters, but that might be because I’ve only been living here for some 10 years.

About raising child/children, I think it’s pretty much up to the parents, and of course also school. If you can find a good school – and that does in my opinion not need to be an expensive international, a good and more affordable English Program will do – Thailand seems not as such a bad place.

Making a living from a Thai-income is both questions of skills and expected life-style. It may not be that easy to find a well-paid job without some skills, but there are of course lots of possibilities, if you check around; both within business/marketing/sales and perhaps even as fitness trainer; some of the numerous luxury resorts might be an option.

Another possibility is to become independent and open you own business, but that requires some capital, and the right company set-up, hereunder sorting out the questions about Thai partners/shareholders; you don’t mention if your girlfriend is Thai and a potential business partner. I know quite a number of foreigners who have done extremely well with business in Thailand.

Moving and get settled require some level of capital, if a major company, paying more-or-less all expenses, is not employing you.

But please remember, it’s “hard work” and require some careful thinking to settle in Thailand – some don’t succeed and get very disappointed...

Wish you good luck with your plans.

95% of the jobs ,Thailand will not allow foreigners to do.They say taking jobs away from Thai people. You could possibly need

Some kind of A degree to be able to teach. If you don't have quite A bit of money then you might want to think twice.

As far as kids I'm not going to go there.Good luck to ya.

And you really believe Thailand would be a better place to raise children? Serious? Really?

And have a daughter that has slept with over 100 guys by the age of 20 years old that's self centred and only cares about herself...

Most westernised children have no respect in their parents and throw them in a nursing home when they get old. Family is last on their list! It's become a nation of narcissistic people.

Feminism has poisoned westernised society, it's gone to total shit in the last 20 years... No one bothers with westernised women if they want to get married... I thought everyone here has moved to Thailand (or try to live here as much as possible) for this reason and married a Thai woman.

I just want a normal family that's traditional. My other option is Eastern Europe but I hear it's been poison by Feminism as well...

Yes, there is better education in Australia but it's the destruction lifestyle that it's become! Partying, drinking, drugs, over eating, narcissistic behaviour, at teenagers, TV addiction, video game addiction, where most will go with 'herd behaviour' when they become teenagers. I have found it to be better in Thailand (2 years here now) but I do admit, the kids are starting to embrace westernised values.

OP has stated a clear decision and asks for how to do it.

I made a similar decision, and I would hate it if I only get answers that doubt my decision.

Sorry fitnesspm, I can't help you at the moment because I'm in another age class (66 yo now)

From what I know you are only allowed jobs that no Thai can do.

Do you have enough money (2 MB or so) to set up a company of your own?

Mate,

Honestly if is this is your reasoning and rational for moving to Thailand stay were you are...I think you yourself need to grow up

per below your quotes, if your saying things like that, you obviously haven't spent much time in Thailand with your eyes open

further below quotes are a failure in the parenting not the country your living in

One suspects you up for getting a good education for your kids, to give them the best shot in life, so let me ask you this, you up for THB 250k a term in school fees

Thats what it can cost you in Thailand, and based on what you have written, seems the best shot you have is an "English" teacher, so fancy that on THB 30k-50k month ?

And have a daughter that has slept with over 100 guys by the age of 20 years old that's self centred and only cares about herself.

I think your sentence with a daughter who slept with over 100 guys is matching Thai daughters better. Look how many of them have already children's here.

You might have right when you say that in Thailand children's supporting their parents. I guess, this have more to do with the lack of social welfare. I stay now 7 Years in Thailand and plan to move back to Europe. I believe, things are changing very fast in Thailand not necessary for the better. More and more Thais have serious problems to make a living. Some of them, decide to do illegal activities. Another thing, we as foreigners are tolerated, but not really welcome. Thais have a very subtle way to show you that. Then, I'm alone. So in only have to take care myself. It's my own adventure. Personally i would think twice about to bring my Familly / Kids to Thailand because of lack of legal certainty, social welfare, education system, political situation and so on.

But yes, it took some time to realize this. I wouldn't wrote the same after one or two years stay in Thailand.

Sounds like you have created your own reality and are just looking for some people to agree with the decision you've already decided upon.

Good luck with that.

"One suspects you up for getting a good education for your kids, to give them the best shot in life, so let me ask you this, you up for THB 250k a term in school fees"

Most uni students back home in Australia have spent 5 years of their lives going to university and are working at 7/11s or some other shitty job. THB 250k i'm guessing is a private school, I wouldn't waste my money! A basic education is enough for starting off. Think about it, half the stuff we learnt at school we don't even need. It's best to work out what you want to do and work your way to that goal. You have to be able to sell yourself at a job interview. I've gotten jobs in accounting in the past where I was against people that spent 3-5 years at university studying accounting (I did a short course), same with Information Technology (1 year of uni). They had basically no social skills where I just sold myself and told the employer what he wanted to hear.

I refer you to this article (Why Men Should Not Go To College)

oh dear....how old are you, as your coming across like a sulking teenager ?....you have all the answers already, you know it all...so why bother asking on here ?

like it or not dear boy, contrary to what you believe a good education is your gateway to success for most people, the ones who are working in 7/11's are most likely took liberal arts degree's which are not worth a shit to anyone for the most part.

Where I sit today very much related to my parents scrimping/saving to give me the very best education they could afford, I had no contacts/family connections to give a hand up or open a door, but the fact i had a good education opened many doors for me and for that I am very thankful to my parents

like it or not, Private schools and in the Thai context international schools open a lot more doors for a student beyond just the decent education aspect (which opens doors locally and internationally) but one also has to consider the "school friend" aspect, as lots of these children are put in these schools by the well to do families in Thailand and building relationships and friendships in school, can go a long way later in life, if the child decides their future is in Thailand,

so in the scheme of things THB 250k a term is not a waste of money, only fool who cant see the direct benefits believes its a waste of money.

I don't know the reality in Australia because I've never been there.

Where I come from, neighbours call the police if children are too loud, and many kids at school are treated with addictive drugs because they behave like children.

I would certainly not want to raise children there.

Guess sexuality is normal for teenagers. The fact that many Thai girls get pregnant very early in their life doesn't prove promiscuity.

The fact that there's hardly any welfare in Thailand doesn't prove that would be less respect for the elderly if they had welfare. Remember most Thais are Buddhist, and respect for the elderly might come from their religion.

I'm sorry fitness pm what you have written immediately above this post is a load of dribble.

The universities put statistics out on the employment of their graduates and most are actually in decent employment. Oh and a general university dregree can be done in three years not five.

The education system is an absolute disaster in Thailand compared to Australia, it is more of a brainwashing institute.

In relation to being a teacher you will pretty much need next to nothing for a 30k job or to work at a true international school running a foreign curriculum you will need a degree in teaching and will earn upwards of 100k a month.

The children inthailand are as badly behaved if not worse than children in Australia. They have easy access to drugs and guns. You should also look at the level of teenage pregnancy is Thailand. It was flagged as a national problem.

I spent five years living there and know a lot. I'm surprised that you have spent two years there and are asking these questions.
