I disagree with the above post(s) saying all farangs are disturbed. When I arrived in Pattaya ten years ago, I joined a number of pool teams then the Quiz league. I've probably socialised with several hundred. I cannot think of any that I would classify as inadequate/deranged/demented.

OP go to Charlie Browns Tex-Mex on soi 11 & speak to the boss - David. He speaks fluent Thai &, in his forties, knows the places to go.

Tell him Mike sent you.

Thanks so much. I will go to Charlie Browns for sure and talk to him. I agree with you that the previous post saying 19/20 of the guys here are deranged is a serious exaggeration. If the percentage of guys who lose the plot is ten percent at home than perhaps it's tweny or thirty percent here. Way too high for sure but not the majority.

Dont thaivisa have a bar also? Still open??

I went to sukumvit7 and there's no Thaivisa bar. Just a small sign in front of another bar where the waitress said TV occasionally has events there

Just to be clear I'm in my early forties....in a stable relationship with a Thai girl for a long while and enjoy a few beers from time to time.

On my way back to Bangkok now in fact from the islands....a trip paid by my gf.

Plenty of normal friends around Bangkok too....if you want to find losers you can find them for sure... but its certainly not a majority....to suggest such is very misleading.

Get out of the ghetto and the percentage of idiots is very small indeed here

Didn't ask for your resumé, pal.

I think it was pretty clear that I

was talking about Western guys

in the farang-oriented bars in

Bangkok which is what the OP

asked about.

He didn't actually say farang-oriented bars, he just said he wanted to meet up with other Westerners.

A Western colleague and I had a great night out in a karaoke bar in On Nut. But you'd need to pick up your foreign acquaintance first - I've seen very few other Westerners in there, and they didn't look like they went for some blokish banter at the bar

Yes I never mentioned bars or drinking or girly places or anything of the kind in my original post. Amazing how many either didn't read it or just assume that finding friends means getting drunk etc.

I find that wherever I roam, I enjoy the fellowship of my compatriots. I don't specifically seek them out, but fortunately we are a well-travelled bunch. I don't specifically choose my drinking acquaintances by race, nationality or religion, but that's just the way that it seems to end up.

And if I had had a hard day struggling to teach Thai children English, or supervising workers across a language barrier in a factory, or whatever, I am sure I would welcome the opportunity to mentally unwind with similarly-minded fellows with whom we might share our experiences, trials and tribulations of the day

Well said! I'm not on holiday in bkk. I live here, and as I said in my original post, I'm newly single so have a lot more free time on my hands. I know where to go to find women, I'm searching for good places to go to make friends.

Personally, I've yet to meet anyone in a bar with whom I wished to socialize, whether western or Thai. The ones I've met who stand out in my memory are the sort with whom I would NOT wish to socialize under any circumstances. The few times I can recall having fun in bars have all been when other friends (known from elsewhere) and I have decided to go to a bar for a beer, pool, darts or what have you. There might be a few people on ThaiVisa with whom to socialize, but if you look over the comments in this thread (and Oh So Many others), you'll see that picking them out can be a daunting proposition.

I'd recommend you find yourself a few activities to pursue and make friends through those activities. Someone mentioned golf in a previous post. Don't care for the game myself, but you may. The activities I generally pursue here are scuba diving, touring on motorcycle, and Buddhist studies.

The oceans have declined somewhat, but there are still plenty of fantastic places to dive around SE Asia, including the WWII shipwrecks around Coron, The Philippines, Sipidan, off the SE corner of Borneo, and the Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar, to name but a few.. Fantastic exercise. You'll be in your best physical shape ever after a year or two of steady diving. And meet people who are busy doing the same thing you're doing, and so with the same interest. When not in the ocean somewhere (working in BKK), there are always swimming pools in which to practice in the early mornings or late evenings.

Motorcycle touring might not be for everyone, but hey -- you're living in a foreign country. Seems reasonable to go see it, one way or another. Take a camera, of course. And too, you can stop into the pubs in Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai and Roi Et, and see if there are people there you'd want to hang out with. And stop at various Thai places as well. I always find the local markets interesting, and especially the bigger ones. The Thai people are often kinda cool, too. Much more interesting than the drunken crowd one finds in foreign bars at lunchtime in Khon Kaen, but hey... Go see for yourself.

Buddhist studies: You don't have to become a Buddhist, but if you have any spiritual interests, learning more about the religion can't hurt, and where better to do such than in Thailand? Look closely enough and you'll see that Thai/Chinese/SE Asian Buddhism doesn't look quite like what passes for Buddhism in the states and Europe. Folks around here are more lay Buddhists, with more than a passing interest in animism (spirits). And how come Muslims in India killed all the Buddhists way back when, anyway? What's the difference between Mahayana and Theravadin Buddhism? Maybe you've no interest in such matters, but it's a possibility.

So there are a few ideas (more, if you include photography) for activities that will get you out and about and socializing, with none of them requiring you to actually step into a bar. If you think about it, there are surely many other activities to pursue (I used to love racquetball, but there are no courts anywhere near where I live. Think there are some in BKK, however.).

And never know... Perhaps others will suggest alternate activities. Language studies, perhaps?

^^^^, avoid the rip off prices above, head to Suk soi 107, LH side as you enter from Suk Rd.

What kinds of places are there at suk107?

Probably better to find out for yourself, since you have time on your hands.

I'd appreciate a report back.

There's quite a few foreigners live out that way, but I don't think there's that many that drink there - and certainly I think you'd be lucky to strike up sociable companionship there by chance. I thought I noticed another Western bloke last time I was in a karaoke bar up that way, but he didn't seem interested in idle bar banter - just as well, unless we both knew sign language, as the music is often quite loud in these places.

I quite like the Robin Hood on Sukhumvit 35 or so (its on the main road, so easy to find, and convenient for the BTS); I think its the place I've had the most pleasant conversations with foreign strangers in Bangkok.

If your after a nice honest country girl who hasn't been with many farang and who doesn't have a BF and is not after you for your money ....... don't just go to any old bar because you may be deceived or lied to ........ your best off heading straight to Nana plaza bars or any bar in soi 4 .

They will immediately inform you how handsome you are and the rest will be history ....

Just to break the ice, wear a sign that says, "I won't ask for money, nor will I lend you any. I just want to hang out for a bit." I'd buy you a beer and chat for a bit.

Chiang Mai Cricket Sixes - it can't be more than a year away. A great weekend's drinking, and if you say you're American, 70% of people will try to explain the game, 20% will try to confuse you, and 10% will denigrate baseball .

And you'll have a nice weekend away from Bangkok

On reflection of your later posts, there is nothing there for you, It was a facetious reply to a previous post.

Same same as there is nothing for you at Lam Sali junction on Ram Rd.

The best action is in the suburbs, but pls dont tell everyone.

Sorry SC, first of all please let me aplogise for being such a tool.

Yes I noticed you, however I had more pressing matters to attend to, the mrs had just phoned to let me know her sister was headed in the general direction, spitting fire and fumes and muttering expletives that cant be posted on here, I was too busy trying to get my BIL into a taxi before the dragon arrived.

Take your pick of the 'pretties' posted outside these fine establishments, be aware a smattering of Loa or Burmese would help, LOL.

Be aware, the pretty ones are actually men, never mind, I hear the Nana Plaza is turning into a Ladyboy joint these days, lovely..

Personally I prefer Jools or Chequers on Suk soi 4, for the simple reason, it keeps out the CCs.

Maybe Smokes can give an update on The Londener up at Pattankarn, the mrs comes home from work every day and reports no progress..

Never mind, Tawana Square (Bang Kapi) is rocking with hotties every night, the prices are killing me LOL, 75 baht for a large Leo, I go for a night out and it costs me about 500 baht, that includes the taxi home.

Soi Cowboy and the Nana rawk, LOL.

Yes, a smattering of Burmese or Laos wouldnt go amiss, LOL, otherwise stick to internationally recognised sign language.

Koh san rd. Lots of yanks at starbucks. Who will talk about anything and everything loud enough for you to hear over your thoughts. I think you will find most foreigners keep to themselves. Dont know why i really love american tv but cant stand yanks in person!

I'm not going to touch that with a ........rolleyes.gif

An American who travels abroad and immediately wants to "hang out" with westerners. Why not save your money and stay in America? It boggles the mind.

It doesn't matter if it's not what you or I would do ... that's what the OP is asking

Khao San can be equally a great place to meet people and the most terrible in the city. Obviously, a lot of people knocking about but the long termers that stick around there don't tend to be the cream of the crop, in my experience

A lot of teachers and if sitting in some of the open bars they are often speaking very loudly with their views on Thailand, culture, politics. Been living in BKK 7 months, you see ... got it all cracked and want people to overhear and engage them in conversation - urgh!

And you obviously are so superior with your fine manners. The hypocrites on here who build themselves up to be better than are some of the most obnoxious people I've run into regardless of origin. Just sayin'.

Think it was mentioned, but Check In 99 is pretty good (Google it) Or just wander around and see you what you find, plenty of friendly locations and expats all around.

Not at all, but just being honest

Would you be referring to my neighbors in the US who are from the Philippines? Or the ones from Korea? Or the ones from Spain? Or the numerous ones from Mexico? Or...

OP. I came here in my mid 30s on a 5 year sabatical. I was not single, I had (and still have) a Western gf.

Here's my 2 cents:

The locals will always be locals no matter how educated they are. Thai structures are very rigid and very complex. You can meet great people but Thai will be Thai. Nuf said.

Brings us to the expats. IMO they can be devided in the good (often educated, doing well in thailand professionally or happily-retired), the bad (sexpats, white trash, scum) and the ugly (bitter, frustrated, often alcoholic know-it-alls, often with dominant isaan wife, often self-proclaimed thailand specialists, often speak +/- 40 thai words after being here 10 years, often wearing a buddhist amulet). In my experience (but I have never lived in BKK or any touristy area) the "ugly" are the majority here (60%) and a total pain in the @ss. On a first meeting they might be able to listen to your story and engage into a "conversation". After that it's a one-way system, complaining, telling you don't understand thailand, etc. So my advice: find the good! They often have a low-profile, will rarely drink beer chang and don't wear budhist amulets, haha!

For every 20 Western guys

you meet in bars here, 19

of them have serious issues.

Money, relationships, alcohol

abuse, sex addiction; the list

is exhaustive. Ten times

worse than in farangistan; at

least there, the need to keep

your head above water stops

many guys going too far off

the rails but here, the time,

the low cost of booze and the

women prove to be too much

temptation for some.

What a load of negative old cobblers.

Away you go and enjoy your pipe and slippers old man!

i love reading all this crap generally posted by people sitting around behind the computer in their village palaces stripped down to their underwear to save a baht on AC.
